This error message appears after attempting to perform a Microsoft XP Security Update using Parallels Desktop 3.0. I followed every suggestion from the Microsoft Knowledge Base with no change, then I found this page: http://ptn.parallels.../faq/desktop/6/ "Networking in Parallels Virtual Machine" This is what I did: Open Parallels Desktop and click on "Network Adapter . . ." ensure both the Device Status boxes are checked and then select "Bridged Ethernet" under "Emulation". This eliminated the error message and I've had no problems updating Windows XP.

satxusa,
I did a quick check on Microsoft's Knowledge Base and found this:

I want to thank satxusa for this post.
I encountered the same thing on my new imac. I was able to correct the problem following the instructions in the first post. All is well.
I would like to introduce myself to the community as a new Mac user. My husband surprised me with a new iMac at my doorstep the other day. I wasn't expecting it at all, but I am delighted to have it. I use parallels to run my Windows software for work purposes. I am a WM user who works on a software forum team. I plan to use parallels to continue to test software for our developers and help our customers with issues.

Hi,
I just got Parallels installed and put Windows XP on. I can't get connected to the windows update site. I tried the steps in the link above, even did the automatic guided steps with the downloaded software, and still continue to have the same error. I have no firewall installed since I just finished installing windows XP prior to running the updates.
Is there a setting change we need to do in the MAC end to allow Windows to connect to the computer?

Can you connect to the Internet at all in Parallels (i.e. go to a webpage in Internet Explorer)?
How you do you have Parallels setting configured for the network adapter?

Oh I got it to work!
I had to allow sharing of the internet under the MAC System Preferences, then I switched the connection to shared network.
Thanks anyway!

The bridged option will only work if you are on a system where you can get two IP addresses. If you attach directly to a dynamic IP address system such as cable modem or DSL with NO router, then this option should NOT work, unless you are paying for more than one IP address. If you are operating on a home network behind a router, then it should work. This options results in a different IP address for the Windoze OS and for the Mac OS.
The shared option "shares" the IP address of the Mac OS...i.e. both Windoze and the Mac OS use the same IP address in effect. Basically, the Windoze stuff is just a "subset" of the Mac OS network traffic. This is generally the most "generic" method and will work in most, if not all, cases.
The host-only option basically just networks the Windoze virtual machine to the Mac OS...bascially like a little network within the one computer.

Thank you for the link.
I applied the link and now when I go to windows update, I get the following errors...
"Update for background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)"
I can't get past this point in the update process. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this issue?
