For Snow Leopard, "/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd" must be changed to "com.apple.backupd"
So now the whole command will read something along the lines of:
syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender com.apple.backupd | tail -n 10

Real world example: every fourth or fifth backup, Time Machine decides it has to back up several GIGS of John's information. John wants to know what the files are that are triggering this, so maybe he can do something to relieve it. Guess what? backupd doesn't log anywhere the individual files that it's backing up.
