iTunes can't "find" my iPod - Help!

Hi
I'm running Leopard, the latest version (updated yesterday). Today, I updated my iPod firmware. iPod is the 160 GB Classic. That took a couple of tries... then I attempted to apply new settings for syncing iCal with my iPod. When I hit "apply" there was a pause, then an error message saying that the new settings could not be saved because "Steven Simon's iPod could not be found." Needless to say, I couldn't sync iTunes and my iPod at all.
