I've been trying to access various websites, specifically IRS.gov and I keep getting messages saying that I need to have a firewall.

What is a firewall, how do I get one on my MBP and how much are they? Also how would I go about adjusting the settings on my MBP to allow a firewall?

I'm anxious to check the status of my tax refund so any help is much welcome.

Thanks to all who can help.

Kyle, the IRS website is a tad hostile to Safari, it that's what you're using.
And the message I get is "unable to establish a secure connection."

I can't imagine why your machine needs a firewall. Or are you a server?

However, NetScape 9 (for us old-timers) and FireFox 2 work fine.

It does for me, too, Tom. On most things.

The hangup the OP (and I) found was in the "show me my refund" page.

That was my hang up as well. I'd go to check my refund but then get the same message but now that my refund is in my pocket I'm good to go.

Just to explain this part, OS X already comes with a pretty good firewall. Mac Help can tell you all about it.
