Hi, I've just switched to Word 2008 and despite it incompatibilty with EndNote I'm managing to get my thesis done but I haven't encountered an anomoly concerning word counts.

In the native docx format I'm getting results at around 5000 words but when I convert the file to Rich Text (rtf) the number increases by around 700 words. Due to strict word limits for submission for assesment I would really like to make sure that I'm not going to be over/under by too much.

I suspect that the issue may be something to do with the way numbers are counted (i.e. l1,000 ; 1660 ; #1,000 ; p. 232) but i can't see why word would treat numbers differently on what file format I use.

Any suggestions?

Kyle

How about if you convert it to .doc format? I'm going to try a few tests myself, like using a simple 10 word sample with some contractions and stuff, then check the words.

I haven't tried a word count in .doc, mainly because that format isn't useful for EndNote but I will try it for comparison purposes.

Let me know how your trial goes.

My test consisted of writing a simple sentence, then saving it in RTF, DOC and DOCX format. It came back with 19 words on each try.

I then took a much larger file (complete with tables) and did the same thing. With each format, I found 6016 words.

So, I guess that doesn't actually solve your problem.
