Is a disk repair program similar to the late Norton Disk Doctor necessary for Mac OSX Tiger and/or Leopard with their SMART technology? If "yes", is TechTool by Micromat part of the answer? Or is Disk Warrior all that's needed?
Is virus protection necessary/desirable for Mac OSX? I've always used Symantec but is it the best choice?
(I've noted some negative comments re: NAV elsewhere in these forums.)
Thanks,
k.alan

Yup, a disk diagnosis/repair utility is a necessity, but only if you mind losing
data. I have and use both TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior. I've heard good things
about Drive Genius, but I haven't tried it.
I'd keep TTP even if I never launched the app. Its "eDrive" feature puts a logical
startup volume on your HD. Boots a bunchload faster than CD or DVD. I copied
my Disk Warrior app to eDrive. I have both apps available to me in a single fast
booting startup volume.
Virus protection? Repeat after me. There is no Macintosh virus. I've had Macs
since our first machine (a Mac II) in 1986. All I've ever seen are MS Office "macro
viruses" which are (1) cross platform and (2) not viruses per se. They are defeated
by disallowing macros in MS Office apps -- which is the default.
Hope this helps.

A/V no... you are spending money that.........
wastes CPU/HD/RAM resources to protect you from something that does not exist. ( and you PAID for this slowdown )
and if it ever does, what you are being choked with will not protect you until it's patched to do so.
my money says Apple will patch the OS faster than any AV company will therefore negating the need for AV.
Disk Repair... yes.
I have Diskwarrior and absolutely swear by it.
but with all apps that do the same basic functions, I also have Drive Genius and it has recovered one HD that DW could not. TTP is another good one, but alas, I haven't used or updated it in years so I cannot comment on the current release.
If I had to rely on one and one Disk Utility only it would be Diskwarrior.
