What software and hardware do I need to record TV content (I have DirecTV now with a standard set top box) and get it to my Mac for editing with iMovie or FCExpress 4? Will I need to upgrade my service to a TiVo set top box or is there another hardware option? My existing set top box has a usb port I think...
Also, what are the laws governing what content recorded from TV can be shared on something like YouTube? Can anyone point me to an online sorce that discusses this?
THANKS!

I understand that DirectTV has its own DVR box. According to the ads, it is
infinitely superior to TiVo. Right.
I've also been led to believe that one must copy the entire contents of the DVR
or TiVo, so it might be well to wipe the beast before coping a program if you want
to download it onto your Mac. However it is done.
The USB port is solely for techies to use to diagnose/repair/upgrade the box. Not
an option for transferring programs.
As I understand US copyright law, it is perfectly OK to copy a TV program for
the purpose of time shifting -- watching it at a later time. It is not OK to share
copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright owner. Ever.
