Try nano, it has some advantages over pico. See http://www.nano-editor.org/

Thanks for the good tips, but when writing an article about what's new, please stick to what's new.
Zoom with the trackpad and control works great with Tiger; it's not a new thing to Leopard.
Also, the motd customization works with every version of OS X (and Linux and UNIX); it also is not new to Leopard.

Actually, everyone who tries pico in OS X is actually trying nano -- they are one and the same. Proof:
$ cd /usr/bin
$ ls -al pico nano
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 297424 Sep 23 19:12 nano
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 4 Dec 6 13:46 pico -> nano
$

Apple linked pico to nano, probably to avoid breaking scripts or aliases that relied on the existence of pico.

Yes, it does. But what's new with Leopard is the fact that motd doesn't exist, so you don't get a welcome message. Hence, if you didn't know anything about it, you wouldn't know you could customize it.
