Hey,
I just got one of the new Macbook Pros (2.4ghz) and I am having some issues connecting to the internet via ethernet. I have successfully connected through wifi, but it simply won't connect otherwise. What should I do?

Thanks for your time,

Carson

Did you go to System Preferences>Network and select your ethernet as 'how to connect'?

Bob.

How are you connecting? Through a router? Or directly to a DSL or cable modem?

Have you looked in the Network Prefs to see if you are getting assigned an IP address if the router/modem is running an DHCP server (i.e. handing out dynamic IP addresses)?

Have you tried a different ethernet cable to make sure it is a good cable?

I don't know how to specifically designate the ethernet as the primary source of internet. I live in a dorm, and I am not too sure if what we have in the room is a cable router or a modem (it is in a locked metal box on the wall). When I connect the ethernet, it recognizes it, and assigns an I.P. address using DHCP. The ethernet cable is not faulty, it is what I am using right now to post this. Any more suggestions?

Thank you again,

Carson

OK, I am confused. If you are connecting "right now" with the ethernet cable, then I don't understand what problems you are having with the ethernet connection. If you were connecting using the ethernet cable, then it appears it is working fine. I must be missing something.

I am really sorry I didn't clarify. I have another Macbook Pro that is working fine with the ethernet cable.

Ahhhhh...as the clouds move aside to let the sun shine through with knowledge! :)

So, when you connect the problematic computer, does the Network Status section of the Network Prefs show an IP address? Does that Mac not work with ANY ethernet connection or just the one in the dorm room (i.e. have you tried it elsewhere)?

Yes, it assigns an I.P. address. It says "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect." I have not had the opportunity to connect anywhere else with the ethernet however. :/

Let me guess...does the IP address start with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx? If so, then that means there is some sort of networking problem with the ethernet adapter and it is "running home to mama". Basically means that you are NOT getting an proper IP address and a connection is NOT established.

The first thing that I would try is connecting to another ethernet connection...just to makes sure it is not something weird with that connection in your dorm room. It is not likely since you can use another computer on that connection fine, but we should double check.

The next thing is to try to test the network adapter. I believe there is a hardware test utility on the Mas OS X install/restore disk. If so, then try that. Otherwise, your best bet would be to take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Repair Center to have them test it out. Is it still underwarranty?

If you wanted, you could try reinstalling the OS to make sure that it is not some networking OS corruption issue.
