I have a Canon HG10 and it works beautifully with iMovie 08 and FCP.

Yeah, I also have a tapeless camcorder, a JVC Everio 30GB model, and it works really well with my iMac. There is no software to install, you just have to select on the camera that you want to transfer to PC, and it comes right up, although by default, it opens up iPhoto instead of iMovie, but that's a minor inconvenience at best. It transfers footage into iMovie very fast and very easy, so as long as you buy the right camera, I see no problem. It's still easier than using it with a PC, and no need to install any software...

I just purchased the New Canon Vixia HF10 High Definition Camcorder, specifically to record and edit on my Intel iMac. Shipping to me as I type.
Should I be concerned?....Any known issues?

From looking at the spec of the camera I would have to say you should not have any problems.

The Vixia HF10 just arrived in our lab yesterday. I had plans to test it today, but I've caught a cold. I'll know if it works by tomorrow.

I wish Canon would get a clue from Apple about product naming. But to the point: can someone explain the fundamental differences between Canon's HF, HG, and HV series cameras?

I believe the nomenclature you are asking about refers to the storage media. So:

HF: high def (H), Flash memory (F)
HG: high def (H), hard drive (G)
HV: high def (H), MiniDV tape (V)
HR: high def (H), DVD ®

As for Apple, even a company that large can?t be expected to ensure that every software update works seamlessly with
every piece of third-party hardware right out of the gate.

It has nothing to do with the hardware. I thought the idea of using a standard format (MPEG) was that any software should be able to play the video file and not have to worry about compatibility. Either Sanyo or Apple isn't correctly correctly following the standard when writing or reading the mpeg file. Digital picture (JPEG) software doesn't have to worry about which camera a picture is taken with.

I have been using a Sony HDR-CX7 with iMovie 8 on Leopard with no problems.

I've been using The Aiptek HD Tapeless camera. It's a piece of crap toy, but it doesn't have any conflicts with mac or FCP.

I just bought the Canon Vixia HF10 High Definition Camcorder, also specifically to record and edit on my Intel iMac. Unfortunately, I'm disapointed with the results. The camcorder does a great job, and I can easily import the video into iMovie 8 after I have burned the contents of the camera's internal flash memory to several DVDs. The problem is that the latest version of iMovie does not allow you to edit in 1080 hi definition. So what is the point in shooting in HiDef, if you can't edit in that format? I've been trying to use the Windows software that came with the camera. Maybe it will allow me to edit in HiDef and output the completed project in 1080.

Be sure to notice that iMovie does not allow you to actually edit and preserve your final project in the 1080 HiDef format. That makes it a fairly useless program for me.
