It's very hard to believe eMusic's number, when they have in fact given away so many free downloads as promotions -- it seems eMusic is free to make up whatever definition of 'sold' they like. For example, if you buy a memory card and it comes with 50 free downloads, then technically those downloads were sold. Seems eMusic would happily throw those in with the total, and it wouldn't take long to add those up into the tens of millions of downloads (personally I found their interface and policies so useless that I haven't even bothered to download free music from them!)
I much prefer Apple's strategy of giving the 'downloaded' number, which obviously includes promotions and giveaways, though in Apple's case that's a drop in the bucket.
