Seagate External HD failed

I just got a new iMac and was going to transfer stuff from my external HD (running with my old toshiba laptop)... after plug in to iMac... it ask if I want to initialize it. Then I went back to my toshiba laptop and it ask if I want to format it... HELP!!!

To Clarify: Are you saying your mac won't recognize your PC formatted external drive when you plug
it into the mac?

Your best bet is to set up the two machines so they talk to each other and transfer the data that way.

I wouldn't answer the question 'Do you want to format the drive' in either system (you'll lose all your data).

I don't believe that helps as I believe the original poster mentioned that the drive is also not recognized now by the Windoze PeeCee and that computer is asking to format it as well...which is a problem since the data is on the drive I believe.




If both computers are trying to format it, then you might have to try data recovery software like Data Rescue II for the Mac or Data Rescue PC for Windoze. Both are offered as demos that you can download to determine if the program believe it can recover files, but then you have to purchase to actually recover the files. You obviously need to plug in the drive but DO NOT say yes to formatting.
