Bugs & Fixes: Yahoo Mail won't send

I have a vexing problem associated with a pre OSX10 Mac. This computer is a 9600 Mac upgraded to G4 and 1GB RAM. It has performed beautifully on the internet. My server (AT&T) says that for security reasons Entourage (10.1.6) and Internet Explorer (5.1) can no longer be used. The only advice was to upgrade these programs.Microsoft has no upgrades for the Mac versions of these programs. I cannot find any browsers that allow an OS9.1 System to use AT&T.Do you know of any? This appears to mean that pre-OSX Macs have been frozen off AT&T and perhaps all servers. Hope you can help.

I am also getting the password rejection message for mail, however, my account is with Verizon/Yahoo DSL service. Is there a similar workaround for that service? I have not received any notices from Verizon indicating that I needed to change/update my settings.

My DSL service is with Verizon, not ATT/Yahoo, but my Apple Mail has also gone nuts during the last week. A few days ago duplicate versions of all my undeleted messages spontaneously appeared (all marked unread, which jacked up my number-of-unread-messages count into the hundreds), and I am now unable to delete messages or transfer saved messages to subfolders. In frustration I tried using Entourage instead of Apple Mail, but in Entourage emailed links wouldn't work. That suggests that the problem is with Verizon, not Apple Mail. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't have the geek gene and am very hesitant to improvise any fixes without knowledgeable help.

THANK YOU!!! Yes, AT&T sent me the fix at least twice over the past six months. I had a problem when selecting SSL- i couldn't edit the number, it was just a shaded 993. Then I blamed it on my iPhone trying to check it the same time Mail did.
But your help has appeared to fix it thus far. I never use the Yahoo web mail, so I never thought to enter in my .mac account info there. I was prepared to click "try again" four times after sending an email for the rest of my life!! Hahaha. Thanks again.

I, too have seen this problem, as I have an sbcglobal.net e-mail account. I did follow ATT's recommendations after they mentioned they were changing servers. The only problem that see now are intermittent problems sending from OS X Mail. The SMTP servers are ATT may refuse my connection from time to time.

The AT&T situation you have referred to in your article are actually 2 different issues. One is the port assignment and the other is the address verification. Once the secondary email address has been verified via your AT&T/Verizon/Yahoo account, you can send mail freely. The other items is to change the ports for secure email.
Both can be found here
Address Verification
http://help.yahoo.co...endfrom-07.html
Port change:
# Open your email client program.
# Locate the email account settings for your particular client.
# Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
# Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
# Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL).
# Change the SMTP port to 465*.
# Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL).
# Change the POP3 port to 995*.
# Confirm the above settings before clicking OK.
Also, Comcast did this to their clients about a month or two ago and is now requiring the use of port 587 and outbound smtp authentication.

With all the spam going on, I don't blame them. Their communication of the error wasn't right, but both companies did this. I am disappointed that the article didn't dig deep enough to find the fix to both of these problems and just started slamming Yahoo.

Any reader to think that something similar isn't involved with my Verizon issues described earlier? Any other Verizon.net users reading this?
My symptoms with Apple Mail don't seem to be identical, but the coincidence of Email-Gone-Wild maladies with different servers seems extraordinary.

I did receive e-mails from Yahoo/ATT about the changes however, when I had connectivity issues they had me do the same things Macworld recommended and it works only one way: when the account is offline in Mail I turn it online then hit Get Mail. it will get the mail. However 15 minutes later when I have Mail set to check for new mail on its own, it will tell me I entered my password incorrectly and prompt me to enter it again. I can enter it multiple times and it will never get the mail. It works fine on the iPhone.
Multiple calls to Yahoo have yielded no successful resolution. I'm not sure they care - if I'm forced to use their web interface it generates ad revenue for them.
I've chosen what the author recommended - I changed all my mail to Gmail. Waaaaaaayyyyyy better spam filtering as well. Seriously Yahoo, how many times must I mark an e-mail written in Russian as junk before you get it!

About that last work-around: at my office that works fine. We have always used the SMTP server of our web/email host. But that doesn't work for me at home with my old SBC now ATT internet. My personal email is hosted through the same webhosting company that my work uses, so it would be great if I could get it to work.
By the way, I followed ATT's help pages and made exactly the changes you outline in the article, but my email sending is still sporadic. I have to hit send 4 or 5 times before email goes out.
