I have a somewhat similar problem. I use Apple Mail on Leopard. As a University Professor, our email is handled by an Exchange server at work. But, while I'm home, I have DSL service via ATT Yahoo. As of around a month ago, I began having problems sending emails from home via my Exchange account. I have no problems sending either .mac or Yahoo emails (again, using Apple Mail) via smtp.att.yahoo.com. The only problem is when sending my University email via att.yahoo.com. Sometimes, the mail goes right out. Other times, I get a dialog box indicating it cannot send the email with the selected server. I've discovered that if I'm persistent and just keep clicking "send again" (or however it's worded), it will eventually send it out (sometimes after 4-15 attempts). Our University information technology personnel are at a loss, and they blame ATT. I send several hours one night with ATT customer service, and they are not admitting any wrong-doing either. All I want is for my email to be seamless restored. (Thank goodness for .mac, because mail sent through that account via yahoo works fine; but, for business email, I don't want to be using .mac.) HELP will be greatly appreciated!

Your description here is outdated. This will NOT completely fix the new round of security at ATT / SBC / Yahoo! (although it is a required first step.
The latest round of security prevents DSL subscribers from sending mail through the att / sbs/ yahoo smtp servers from any address other than, say your sbcglobal.net address (if that's what you have). So you cannot send from your mac.com or any mydomain.com mail account.
That is, unless you register the address with ATT / SBC / Yahoo.
The way you do this depends on whether you have your my.yahoo.com online account configured in the new view or the classical.
These instructions work for Classical View:
1) Go into your online mail.
2) Click the "Options" tab in the upper right hand corner.
3) In the Options area middle column is a link for "Mail Addresses" Click
4) Your Yahoo! Mail will already show up. You need to ADD an account.
5) IMPORTANT: At Step 3, Set up Mail Server, click "Skip this Step."
6) Yahoo! sends a verification code to the address you have submitted; you have to retrieve the code, and then go on to verification.
7) It takes several hours for each address to work its way through the ATT/SBC/Yahoo system, so be patient.

Thanks so much for that post. That seems to have solved the problem. Now I just need to add all of my various email addresses...

One additional note. If you send email as a different user than your yahoo account name, which isn't uncommon at all for people who use Yahoo! for forwarding, you need to register that other email address with Yahoo! mail, under Mail Options when logged into the Yahoo! Mail webpage.

I have to apologize but I am still helplessly confused about this situation with respect to registering an email address through the Yahoo online email. My work uses Macs and we all use entourage. We have AT&T DSL at home. My wife has the account, which is a sbcglobal.net email address. I have changed the account POP settings per earlier posts.

Am I registering my work email so I can use Yahoo's webmail service to send and receive work email? Or is it that registering my work email through Yahoo's webmail will allow my Entourage software to once again function properly? I want the latter, not the former.

I should add that I currently receive this error message (although I read an earlier post that said it can several hours to authenticate a new e-address added to the Yahoo system?):

Error: -3176

Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.

I just got off the phone with AT&T. Anyone using an SBC address and still having the 553 error, should use the following SMTP server instead

smtpauth.sbcglobal.net

Unfortunately, using smtpauth just hung on me. That being said, I accidently left the address as smtp.sbcglobal.net. The error message changed to :

Error: -3260
Entourage cannot connect to the server. Verify that your computer is connected to the network.

UPDATE:

There were two different versions about changing the stmp address. One said to replace sbcglobal with att. The other said to use smtp.att.yahoo.com. This second one did the trick. WHEW. Thanks to everyone who posted this info.

After numerous calls with tech support, they finally gave me this for the smtp:

smtpauth.sbcglobal.net

The secured port is 25.

Now I can send mail.
