Electric Quilt? Really? A killer Windows program? I always considered "killer apps" as programs that no one should be without. I don't know how many of us actually need or use a quilting program.

Netflix
or you could buy the new Roku set-top box. (and it's cheaper than Windows).

You don't quilt? Dude, where have you been? Speed quilting, Group quilting, Interactive quilting... it's all... well.... so much FUN!
Actually, I think Zack Stern has been misled by his wife /girlfriend.

I LOVE Netflix, but their streaming video sucks. I get 7Mbps throughput, yet the video still stutters and freezes constantly - making it unusable for me. The problem? It doesn't allow for buffering like other streaming videos do. I guess no buffering for DRM reasons. Yet another way the studios are unable to move forward. They're like the monkey with the apple in his fist, stuck through the bars, unable to let go.

I would like to add Visual Studio to that list. Xcode is great for developing Mac apps, but if you need to do cross-platform development, Visual Studio is a great addition to your toolbox.

This article reads like a marketing Brochure from M$ for us to run Windows. M$ should get their stuff together and give us Mac user what we want, Like Video on MSN Messenger. Plus there are other reasons to Run XP (or vista) virtually, not just M$ 299$ office package.

I would maybe add Microsoft Publisher to this list. Of course, the Mac offers Pages and other, better desktop publishing solutions, but Publisher is still a Microsoft Office application not available for the Mac.

Re Visio:

Macworld said:

It has most of the same flowcharts, network diagrams, and other graphics as OmniGraffle.

Has most of? It has much, much more. OmniGraffle is okay for basic stuff but for professional diagramming you need Visio.

These two fantastic sites are not accessable with a Mac.
http://www.visiblebody.com/
http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/ (owned by Microsoft)
None of both sites are planning a Mac enabled version to date.

Another important one is Microsoft Project. Every place I've worked that tracks projects uses MS Project.

I've tried importing to / exporting from FastTrack Schedule (which I like very much), but it gets messy, and now I have to connect to Project Server. The Win partitions on my Macs is absolutely necessary for MS Project.

The VM software products make it very easy to work with apps in both OSes at the same time, but it irks me that one reason I'm a Maccie is freedom from viruses and other crap -- and I have to vigilantly maintain my AV software on the Windows partition. :-( It sort of defeats the purpose of trying to "do the smart thing".

IE7 and Killer should only be mentioned within the context of something that gives Killer Headaches. It sucks.
Visio...nah I'll take Omnigraffle.
To me the definition of a Killer App needs to center around an app that is so "Best of Breed" and utilizes such forward and intuitive design it's a star from the start. Most of the applications listed here are being called Killer apps simply because they cater to a narrow field.
You want me to buy windows then show me an app that stands on it's own as a testament to design and productivity. Integration is nice but if we had more robust interoperable standards that wouldn't be such a necessary metric.

Another one that's much better on Windows: Quicken. The current Mac version isn't nearly as good as the Windows version. I can't wait until autumn when Intuit should have their much-improved new Mac version.
