The Best Platform??? Is what's best for you! I don't believe, and never have, in Mac of MS or MS over Mac. It's whatever helps you to achieve your goals...personal or in business. With the advent of the Apple / Intel union, you can have both worlds.

In my world, Mac and Windows programs, with the help of VM....live side by side. I enjoy CS3 on the Mac (yes...it's available on the PC but I feel it runs better and more intuitively on the Mac)...Final Cut Pro, Aperture
, Notebook (I use to use MS OneNote but this is good for me as well) and Keynote...

.... on the Windows side...Quickbooks, Slysoft ANYDVD, Ringcentral Call Controler, uTorrent, e-Sword (the best..hands down...Bible program), Amazon S3 Software (Bucket Explorer) and Camtasia Studio... Are all Windows programs I just can't live without.

So...what's best for me? It's a Mac Machine with VM software it that let's me run my SOFTWARE that I make a living with.

And to the person with the Son going off to school....I have one word for you....BOOTCAMP! :)
and here's wishing him much success....Praise God!

I'm not going spend an extra nickel on some fanatical pursuit of computer purity that is based on an absolutely absurd premise that one computer company is more righteous, honest and beneficial to society. If that is a "self-obsessed" view of life, I plead guilty. For those who consider the Apple world morally superior to the PC world, consider this: Bill Gates has -- belatedly -- turned his attention to philanthropic efforts. I know many nonprofit organizations who have received funding from his foundation. Have you heard about the Steve Jobs foundation? That speaks volumes. And here's my last word: We all need to get a life instead of discussing this drivel. On that point, I again plead guilty.

de nada The thread's gone to hell anyway. So I'll chime in as well.

First, I use Windows and Mac programs and until the world's on iPhone OS I probably always will. And I prefer my Mac for reasons I don't always understand, as well as for many of the usual reasons trotted out by the faithful.

But I get really tired of Bill Gates getting lauded because he's followed the classic robber baron path previously trod by J.P. Morgan, the DuPonts, the Rockefellers and Fords -- guiltily turning semi-ethically gotten gains into largesse (and not overly protesting getting the cover of Time Magazine for doing so). OK, so he had a visit from the Ghost of OS's Past after a big meal one night and is trying to shake off a few of the chains he's forged in life. And put up a big dowry to do it.

How does that make him morally superior (or even equal) to Steve Jobs, even if one views him as a grimy little twit who admittedly screwed Steve Wozniak for half the profit on their first real sale and is known to not be beloved by all who encounter him -- one foisted shit on the public to make his billions and I defy you to name one key innovation he added to our digital lives other than an exercise in marketing and gut-punching the monster of the midway (IBM), which in its way allowed lots of other truly creative people to flower by doing their best to make their stuff work with the shoddy products he pushed. And the other is responsible for some of the most transformational products in an industry which has changed how we live, work, relate and play -- all with a commitment to design excellence, user experience and adding to their users' productivity and enjoyment.

So what if Jobs doesn't have a foundation (yet) -- his contribution to the planet is right out there in front of you, and while I wish the Gates' Foundation recipients luck in achieving the gig's lofty goals, they're still being funded with the money of frustrated millions screaming at their melted C:/ drives.

I am simply not that impressed that every time a computer is turned into an Explorerbot an angel gets its wings.

Bah. Humbug.

I'm about to install FrameMaker for Windows on my Mac. FrameMaker is THE BEST tool for large documents that use graphics and that require layered indexes. For indexes it is simply the best. You can quickly check indexed items where they occur to validate their appropriateness.
This in addition to standard features such as generating web pages, PDFs, et al. Also, it supports SGML and XML.
FrameMaker was originally on UNIX, then the Mac, then on Windows. Why Adobe dropped it from the Mac seems really short-sighted.
