One quick note on the Terminal command in the article: I wrote it assuming that you used Software Update to install the 10.5.3 updater. If you downloaded the combined updater instead, and ran it yourself, then you need to change the filename in the command.
For the combined updater, use this filename in the boms folder:
com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.5.3.combo.bom
-rob.

Has the Finder been fixed so it remembers view settings (icon, list, column) for individual windows?

"There are quite a few updates to Macromedia’s Shockwave plug-in, but unfortunately, it’s still a PowerPC plug-in that’s not compatible with Intel Macs (unless you run your browser in Rosetta mode)."
Adobe has already released a Universal version of the Shockwave plug-in in March. Will installing 10.5.3 mess it up by installing an old version instead?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but since I'm still pretty new to the Mac world (and Macworld), does 10.5.3 include the security update that was also released today?

There is a new option under Spaces preferences "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application". This is great. I actually requested this. The automatic switching between spaces was driving me nuts. I prefer it to switch only when I tell it to.

I submitted this as a bug report a while ago and Apple said that it behaves correctly.

See below:
To appeal to many users' desire for a consistent browsing experience, the view style mechanism has changed in Leopard. To view all folders in your favorite view style you only need to click on the view style button once and you will remain in that view style.
To override this behavior for a particular folder, you can set your desired view style in view options. Just open that folder in your desired view style and open the view options window. Check the "Always open in X...", and that folder will always open in that view style.

Hope this helps.

I think this may have to do with better threading or faster downloading of Wikipedia lookups. I like to keep Wikipedia enabled in Dictionary, but in 10.5.2, Dictionary would often freeze for up to 10s of seconds while the Wikipedia page was being loaded. I no longer observe that delay; I can't yet decide whether Wikipedia downloads are faster (Wikipedia is quite fast in my experience) or the Wikipedia lookup is spun off to a separate thread while the other data sources are being displayed.
(Yikes, while editing this response in 10.5.3 with latest WebKit, the "f" key started repeating on its own. I stopped it after a couple of seconds then started hitting the delete key to remove the "f"s. At that point delete started repeating out of control, until I stopped it. Things back to normal now, seemingly.)

This update must have changed a ton of small files...took Time Machine an extended period to sort it out and make the next hourly backup of my laptop. And the TM prefs now has backups on battery as the default...but it can be turned off to save battery life, if desired.

Sorry, previous post was referring to:
Dictionary (something to do with Wikipedia support)
but surrounding the quotation in << >> seems to have elided it.

I now have a message that says that the current Sys
tem Preference files are not usable for this Mac" 1.67 GHz PowerBook. The Mac OS 10.5 was just built a couple of days ago. I downloaded the file from the Apple web site, using this PowerBook. I then ran the .pkg file. It said that all updates were good. I then did an update of Safari & QuickTime. After this restart I tried to go into the System Preferences file, but was not allowed.
Unless someone has an idea that will work, I'll have to start over again on this PowerBook external drive. The drive is a new Hitachi 200GB, 7200rpm 2.5" running in an OWC FW800 case.
Thanks,
Bill the TaxMan

The 5.3 update breaks httpmail, an incredibly useful add-on for Mail that lets you download from your Hotmail account into Mail.
You can still send messages, but no longer receive them from your Hotmail inbox.
Anybody know of a workaround?
Jake

At first I thought the 10.5.3 update messed up my Spaces, as I couldn't switch between them any more. Luckily, it turned out it simply disabled the keyboard short cut in the preferences. Beats me why.
On the other hand, the option to disable automatic moving to another space is a blessing. The previous behaviour was really, really annoying.
