WWDC: Apple slashes prices for 3G iPhone, shipping in July

Am I the only one disappointed by today? I mean, it's great to see the new software features, GPS, .Mac becoming Mobile Me, and Exchange, but, no video camera or conferencing, the camera is still only 2 MP, and still no copy/paste! It's great they will lower the phone to 199/299, but without significant hardware features and the fact that we will have to pay for most apps, they needed to lower the price. Plus, where is the mention of the redesigned MacBook Pros? I know all rumors needed to be taken with a grain of salt, but feel very let down

From fine print at http://www.apple.com...ry/ads/hallway/
"Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately."
Sounds subsidized to me.

The original iPhone had the same requirement and it, apparently, wasn't subsidized.

So they won't be selling it through the Apple online store anymore (just the retail stores and the AT&T stores)? Is that how they are going to enforce the two-year contract requirement? Right now, you can't order an old iPhone through Apple's site, and there is no way to pre-order the 3G. I'm sure the lower price will make these things fly off the shelves again, but it also means that they will be out of the market for a whole month.
If they're selling it at only brick and mortar AT&T and Apple stores it could be a problem. Both are few and far between. It would be a little different if they were going to include stores like Best Buy that are more common and are resellers for both AT&T and Apple.

Very nice update, not a shock that there's 3G but it seems like they've done it well. GPS is a very nice addition-I wasn't convinced they'd add it, but it's a great bonus! The only thing I still find a bit strange is there's no 32GB model. Given that there's a 32GB iPod Touch (I should know, I own one), and given that the 8 and 16GB iPhones are now less pricey, having a high-capacity iPhone seems like such a no-brainer, I dunno why they don't.

Please review the last three Motorola RAZR "updates" in terms of new features and pricing. Compare and contrast to iPhone -> iPhone 3G. Ditto with the upgrades on phones from Nokia, LG, Samsung.
Still disappointed?
Apple is great, but they're not god. It's a good solid upgrade, and dropping the price by half will make it accessible to a whole new class of customers.

Right. Don't quit your day job. With analysis like that, you're doomed to a life behind a Radio Shack counter somewhere.
I was wondering how long it would take to snag one, because there's always one (at least!). Looks like I hooked a whopper!
