From TechCrunch:
Current iPhone customers can upgrade to the 3G iPhone and pay $199 for the 8GB or $299 for the 16GB model. They will need a new two-year contract...there isn’t a no-contract option.
Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.

My registration date has nothing to do with the fact that your original post, followed by the "ha ha GOTCHA" response, fits the textbook definition of trolling like a glove. Proving the point, I guess, that sometimes, there's no fool like an old fool.
Enjoy your post-graduate status -- you're still a troll.
"Troll" as defined by Wikipedia: "An Internet troll. . . is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion

Uh, yeah...troll... right. Who just reg'ed today? Which one of us has been around since the beginning of MacCentral in the '90s? You're just upset that you made a fool of yourself in a public forum. Go ahead, we'll let you have your tantrum.

They lowered the price but the service plans are $10/month higher. Over your 2 year contract you pay $240 more to AT&T. However, many people will see $199 and say it's much cheaper not realizing that the total cost is actually $40 more.
Also, I'm betting that you'll be required to sign up for a contract before they even ship you the phone. Otherwise, the unlockers are going to get a deal.

Can anyone confirm that the new iPhone3G is actually thinner?
http://techland.blog...les-new-iphone/
Seem like the original is 11.7mm, which is 0.46in. The article says the new phone is 2.5mm thinner, which would make it 9.2mm or 0.36in.
But from Apple's own website: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
It looks like it is 12.3mm/0.48in.

Per AT&T at: http://is.gd/tLr
AT&T and Apple no longer have revenue-sharing model. Instead AT&T is subsidizing the price of the iPhone.

What I am curious about is who will pay $299 for an 8GB iPod Touch. Surely the price will drop?
The $199 price for the iPhone 3G is made possible by AT&T subsidizing the price with a 2-year contract. The iPod Touch is $100 more but does not require any monthly payments (minimum of $69.99/month+taxes) to AT&T.
I bought and then returned an original iPhone and replaced it with an iPod Touch. My first month's bill from AT&T (on their cheapest available plan) was over $100 for the first month by the time all the fees, taxes and prorated days were included.

You were expecting an update to the MB Pro, which has been out less than 4 months? Where do people get this stuff. Apple announced some cool stuff today. Why do people have to complain that some wild rumor didn't come true. Where's my flying car???
I tend to agree. My only real disappointment is the increase in cost for the data plan. At a time when virtually everything from gas to food to housing is costing a lot more, people are thinking hard before taking on new obligations like a rate plan increase.
In the flying car category, I for one would have loved to see a tablet with all the functionality of the iPhone, but maybe four times the screen real estate.

"Will there be an upgrade path for current iPhone owners?"
Sounds like the early adopter blues, which is why I am no longer an early adopter.
I also will not buy the new iPhone 2.0, so-called, until I have read all of the reviews and the list of shortcomings of iPhone 1.0, so-called, has been gone over to verify that iPhone 2.0 has at least fixed the majority of issues on that list. As far as the big items (3G and GPS) the iPhone 2.0 so far has no show stoppers for me, yet. A full review, including AT&T plan pricing will tell whether I finally open my wallet to Apple, Inc. and buy iPhone 2.0 and the voice/data plan from AT&T. My motto on iPhone 2.0 is "Trust, But Verify"!
