Don't worry about it. As far as I know, Limewire is the only OS X programme with spyware, and it is only in effect when the programme is running.

iTunes has "spyware" that reports what songs you play and how often, but besides LimeWire and that, thats all I know of.

Spyware is not nearly as big a problem in OSX as it is on any Windows OS.

Yea, Par would LOVE more ammunition! images/icons/wink.gif

I seriously doubt iTunes does this. Who would it send it to and why?

[Edited to add: I think Limewire just tracks URLs.]

If you really want to know, install one of the Ethernet packet sniffing programs (Etherpeek works well; you can install it through Fink) and watch what heads out when you run a given program.

This may be related, but I've noticed--from an ethernet monitoring utility--that my Internet connection is actively used to the max whenever I empty the Trash.

I can't imagine what is being sent to whom whenever I empty the Trash, but it never fails.

As far as I know Spyware (at least of the sort common in the windows world) doesn't exit for MacOS X. And I am pretty darn sure iTunes doesn't report all of your listening habits.

I read that with iTunes 3, Apple incorporated some tracking software that sends what you play to some company that tracks it for "marketing purposes". That's how they know what songs are the most played on the Internet or something.

Ever wonder where the "top 25" and "personal ratings" in iTunes came from? They are more than just iTunes features. I'll look for the article and see what I can find.

I read someone speculating that those could be used for that purpose theoretically in a future version of iTunes, but I haven't heard anything to lead me to believe that it is actually happening.

So far this is all I have found, which does not support the spyware theory, but I'll keep looking.

quote:
Some of iTunes' new features could also lead to new marketing opportunities for Apple. For example, imagine connecting to a .Mac service that examines your listening history and determines you like dance music and R&B, and have lately been obsessed with the new Zero7 album. You're then presented with a Web page from an Apple partner hawking CDs.

Apple has made no mention of providing services like these, but now that iTunes has the ability to track your listening habits and tastes, the foundation is in place. July 18 update: I met with Apple representatives today and asked them about these potential issues. They were intrigued by the iChat integration idea, but when asked about the notion of tracking user's listening habits (as TiVo does with its customers' viewing habits), the response was: "We'd never go there."
