Is the apple logo (on the back) black or chrome? It looks chrome on the Apple site but black in these photos..

How does the white backing look? In the press photos it doesn't look particularly appealing...come to think of it how do you think thenew back plates stacks up against the first iPhone?

Do you think the white back looks better than in the pictures, Jason? Apple's gadgets usually are like that.

I really like the new power adaptor. It's so cute.

The old adapter looked like a tiny version of the iPhone or MacBook power brick.

Impressive trick, looking like a tiny version of itself :)

Was hoping the new iPhone to have video calling abilities. Most 3G markets and operators hype video calls. Also, why is the phone not selling in Malaysia? We dying for it over here. Cheers!

Does the back look like it will scratch up as badly as some of the old iPods? One of the big reasons I like the v.1 is the metal design which doesn't scuff up the phone.

I find it funny that this crowd (Steve Jobs included) refers to the back as simply "plastic." There is a huge variety of plastics that have a great range of properties. No one here would buy, say, an iMac if it were sold as having a big screen with some pixels and a chip with some memory. We gotta have specs!
A lot of the speculation about why the back was chosen and how it will perform would be calmed if we knew exactly WHAT plastic was used.
My other guess about why they switched from aluminum (which was magnificent) to plastic is that the guts became a lot heavier and the lighter material left the total weight about the same.

I think we agree. I think if Jobs said that the plastic, like the 1.0 alumnium won't scratch, I'd be okay with it. It's just we've become accustomed to Apple's plastic products (iPods, MacBook) scuffing up and the aluminum (MacBook Pro, iPhone 1.0) not that I thought I'd bring it up.

One of my beefs with Google Maps was that it was slow. Of course 3g will help this, but I always thought pre-loading maps onto your iPhone was a no-brainer and the way to go. Nice to see that a 3rd party (TomTom) might just do this.

I, too, am disappointed by no native voice dialing. I use this feature all the time on my Pearl, especially in the car. Fumbling with your phone at 60 mph is definitely distracting! This is especially true with an iPhone which ideally requires two hands to use until the call is connected.
Also, no one mentioned the still obvious lack of a flash for the camera and no external storage for all of the new apps I'm going to want to run. Surely they could have made room for a micro SD.

While I'll certainly be fighting to be among the first to upgrade my iPhone to iPhone 3G, I was disappointed that the iPhone 3G had no video capture capability and no video iChat capability. Also, there's no mention (that I've seen) of the camera being upgraded. Taking still pictures with the iPhone is a last resort for me. On the positive side, I'm VERY excited about a Slingplayer client coming to the iPhone 3G. In the first days of owning my original iPhone, the first thing someone showed me (to quickly put me down!) was that THEIR phone could play video from their Slingplayer at home! How embarrassing!

Hands-free dialing IS safer than hand-dialing a phone, but not talking on the phone while driving is safer than both. Not reading, applying makeup, shaving, eating, drinking, listening to music or talking to passengers is also safer. It's all a matter of degree.
