Move over .Mac., here comes MobileMe

You can also save $30 on .Mac at the Apple Store when you buy a new Mac... or with the new iPhone 3G. If you are buying other stuff that integrates (like iLife or Aperture), you can sometimes talk them into giving you the .Mac discount, but they don't seem to be as loose with that as they used to be.

That is pretty much how Blackberry Internet Server workd. You log into a web page. Add up to 8 POP or IMAP accounts. Then the BB server will check those accounts every few minutes - whenever a new message is in any account it gets pushed down to the phone.
If Mobile Me does not do this I will be SORELY disapointed. I have not idea why apple is trying to be an e-mail provider - we have enough of those in this world. Give us great apps to work with e-mail - but leave the addresses to us!

I'm not normally someone who likes to add "me too" posts to a thread, but I think Apple should be aware that there are quite a few of us who depend on receiving email addressed to our existing, non-.mac domain names but don't have access to an Exchange service. I intend to be one of those hapless souls standing in line on July 11th to get my first iPhone and even though I was never a .Mac customer (at least after it evolved into a paid service), I'd get a MobileMe account in a minute if I could keep my e-mail address and domain name.

That's what I am looking for. If I can access my email and domain name using MobileMe as web hosting and email server, I am dumping my web hosting at the end of the year and moving to MobileMe.
The price I pay is the same, so if MobileMe offers the same thing my current web hosting does, it's a no-brainer to move into Apple service. I hope it happens.
Come on Apple, Do it! :-)

Ben, all you need is a Gmail account with iMap turned on,been using it for months, flawlessly. Can even reply and use your other ISP/pop accounts address as the from, don't even have to notify people of email change. Google has clear, concise instruction on how to set up most devices/mail apps on their website. You can have Gmail harvest multiple accounts, anything with pop access.

Yes, but that's only for hosting web content. What isn't clear is whether MobileMe will push email addresses that don't end in mac.com or me.com to the iPhone. If not, it's not going to be a good enough alternative to hosted Exchange for anyone who uses their own domain name for email.
If they were planning on hosting email for other domains as they do with web hosting (though that's really a very minimal service), you can bet they'd have made a big deal about it. Since they were mum on this, I think the chances of it happening any time soon are pretty much nil, I'm afraid. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes in a year or two down the line after they've gotten all the kinks out and increase push-capacity,But if you've already got hosted Exchange, why would you want MobileMe anyway?
Separate topic--what're they thinking with me.com? Gag! How immature--makes me think of having to be abnormally self-centered to want me in the domain name of ones email address. But I guess Apple spent a lot for it and wants a brand refresh. But, really--gag! I for one will stick with my .mac addresses--and Apple better not even consider trying to take them away.

call it cornflakes for all i care, but i would rather have twice the speed of .mac than twice the storage space. thanks for the extra 10gb at no cost, but fix the throughput, eh? .mac is mega slow. .mac is the same exact speed regardless of connection...3mb dsl, 5mb cable, 10mb fiber...it's mega slow. any kind of file management on idisk is a joke. apple needs to fix their webdav implementation. on the same macbook pro and network connection, idisk and any other webdav connection is slow under os x...same non-idisk webdav connections through native xp are at least reasonable. idisk is slow regardless of os.

Does MobileMe provide the ability to remote wipe data in case of iPhone theft? This feature was announced during WWDC as being available for those using Microsoft Exchange but there was no mention for those subscribed to MobileMe. Other than that I don't think it's going to be a big change going from username@mac.com to username@me.com. I would like to know how username@me.com will work with third party chat messengers such as MSN Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and GTalk?

I think the push technology will be great. But I strenuously disagree with the name chosen for the service. I so object to the "me" label that if it my email address changes from ".mac" to ".me", I will get a new email service. We can see the terrible results of the egocentric and ethnocentric focus of our country's government of the past eight years. This must stop. The "me" label is antithetical to all that is positive about the Internet and the freedom and democratization it can engender. I encourage you and everyone who is willing to petition Apple to change the name of this service before it is too late. Steve Jobs certainly should understand this. It amazes me that it could have slipped past his extrasensory perception!

Does anyone know if the family plan will allow a shared calendar/address book situation? I would love this service if say when my wife schedules a Dr. appointment for our daugher if it would get pushed to my calendar/iPhone. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
