I think the data plan price increase is probably doing the most damage. For me to get the 3G plus 200 SMS, my bill would go up 15 dollars. I was just barely barely able to convince myself to pay for the $20 plan. $35 is plain ridiculous.

What damage? According to AT&T's press release about the iPhone 3G: "Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month."

Where did u get $35? Business customers pay $45, but luckily consumers only pay $30 a month (only? thats still not a good thing)

I'll be hanging on to mine. ATTs coverage is so bad in my area that I frequently use my wife's T-Mobile sim in it to make important calls.

I'm not sure yet whether I'll upgrade my current iPhone. The phone is working great so I'll probably wait a while before I go for a new one. The new application support should makes things interesting through the summer in any case.
I would be surprised if Apple expects most people to upgrade their iPhone. It's a bit much for any manufacturer to expect to sell a new phone to each customer every year. Two years seems a more reasonable turnover period.

@louielu12 the $30 is JUST for data. There are NO SMS included. You have to pay $5/month to get the 200 SMS that were previously included for $20/month.
In other words, the AT&T bastards are exploiting their monopoly of iPhone distribution in the USA.
In case you haven't noticed: lack of competition = bad for consumers.
3G is at least 2 hours from me,
I'll be keeping my 1st Gen iPhone at least until my 2 year contract is up in July 2009. Doing so will save me $180 in data plan charges + the $299 for the new iPhone.

still no 32 gig version??? no video? no copy/paste? Steve said better audio??? AT&T GSM buzz fixed yet?? poor deceiving marketing tactics with data price jump is only going to lose the moral of Apple's following and prove to others to stay away. Plastic? will it melt? I guess it always pays to wait and see. I would warn anyone to wait.

Going to stick with the current one. All of the new features that I need will be in the software update, and I don't want to pay more for the 3G data. Haven't seen a clear answer if existing iPhone owners will get grandfathered in. I'm enrobed in WiFi 95% of the time. 3G would be nice, but not if I have to pay more.

I don't have an iPhone, and 3G just isn't an issue. Do you think I'll be able to get the new handset (when I want an iPhone) and just forgo the expensive 3G service? (Essentially the old plan on the new hardware)

Agreed about the 32Gb and copy/paste. As far as the plastic melting... the original iPhone is not made ENTIRELY of metal. The plastic buttons, antenna area and other moldings have held up fine in the car.

Peter, you've actually made me feel better about just keeping the iPhone I have. The beauty of this product is its updatable system software that keeps the old hardware feeling like new. Most of us who switched to AT&T in July 2007 will have our service plans up for renewal in July 2009. Makes much more sense to switch at that point, when the third generation iPhone will likely poke its head out of Apple's proverbial womb.

Going to stick with the current iPhone. If they'd added something truly next level such as iChat video calls or a unified Inbox for Mail I'd probably be into it. But 3G alone just isn't enough nor is the lower price.
If those had been there from the beginning I'd be much more into it. Also no offense but where's the incentive!? Not even $50 or a waiver for the extended data contract for early adopters of iPhone 1.0? No thanks. I'll wait for iPhone 3.0.

I wasn't going to upgrade. But since I dropped my phone onto the end of my desk and cracked the screen, I will upgrade when 3Gi comes out.
And this time around, I might as well get the 16GB version as opposed to my 4GB iPhone and also a case.

Ok, I see what you mean. I just have a different situation. My household lucked out. We had AT&T, so one person got an iPhone (the 4GB was $300, $100 cheaper than a Treo 750 since the price dropped, and it was half the price a month than the Treo 750). We already pay for a family plan which includes $30 a month for unlimited SMS for everyone. So now that more of us will be getting iPhones now that the price is much better (upfront) the only issue is $10 more dollars a month.

But I would have to agree. There should be more competition for wireless carriers. It seems like it would benefit Apple anyway. I can see many people not getting an iPhone 3G only because of the expensive monthly costs. If iPhone 3G was available not just through AT&T, Apple would have more customers, all of which who would be happier to pay less all around, not just upfront.

This is definitely true. I jumped for joy when i saw the affordable price of the new iPhone. I was ready to get one ASAP. However, after doing a cost benefit analysis, it's gonna suit me better to wait on a higher capacity model at the very least, or if i can stand it, one with added physical functionality (flash, 802.11n, RED casing). As it stands now, i won't benefit from 3g, don't wanna spend an extra $10-$15/month (3G/SMS), and really don't need GPS all that much, if at all. So Apple could have made suckers of a lot more iPhone 1.0 owners if the launch had followed quickly of the healls of the announcement. But who knows, maybe i'll eat my words, especially if by some miracle there's something more added to the phone between now and July. A girl can dream right, it's what i live for. ;)
