Will current iPhone owners upgrade to 3G?

No plans to upgrade to this model. New features are not compelling enough - I am almost always near wifi and I already have a GPS device. I also don't want my wireless plan to increase in cost. I don't even know if I will switch to version 3 of the iPhone. If AT&T continues their business practices of increasing prices rather than lowering, I can always switch to another provider and get some cool new crackberry in a year or so.

So, Peter, if you don't use your iPhone as a phone and don't use it for media playback, why keep it? Just curious.
I live in Salem, Oregon, which just got 3G earlier this year, so I would like to grab a second-gen iPhone next month. But I can't really justify the cost right now, so I probably will pick up a first-gen iPhone when they get crazy-cheap and (at least for a while) use it as a cheap iPod Touch.

Who said I don't use it as a phone? I said I get lousy service. I put up with it, but I'm not stupid -- nor am I anxious to spend more money for continued lousy service.

"Will owners of the original iPhone need to start paying $10 more a month for internet, or will it remain at $20 a month for unlimited data?"
You signed a contract. ATT has to keep providing what they promised for as long as they promised to provide it. Unless you buy a new iPhone and agree to the new, more expensive contract, they are obligated to adhere to the original terms.
I think I'm going to stick with my original iPhone for a while - maybe even until my contract runs out in 9/09. 3G is spotty in my area (but improving), and I'm not too keen on $15 plan bump right now. True GPS would really be useful to me but the Google map can get me by for a while. Besides, who knows what improvements will be on the 3rd generation?

red would be cool even just the color if not the Bono Africa thing. the black and white seems too much like the macbooks, which are ok but not that impressive to me. the black and grey new iMac design I didn't like at first but quickly grew on me and seemed a nice fit for the phone. flash? would that be for the camera? that'd be cool if it also doubled as a flashlight, or an emergency light, or a "find me" light since it's all black. N would be great!!! speaking of functionality, it would be nice to change iPod settings like the equalizer, within the iPod and have repeat options. All in all, 2.0 should be a great upgrade in itself and that's FREE! but yeah, before I heard about the price jump with AT&T I was ready to go out and upgrade myself. Too bad for them we have more time now to catch up to things.

I was ready to pull the trigger until I saw that my data costs will almost double. $35/month seems like a lot when one's only data plan experience has been $20/month.
I can see a $10 increase for the advantage of 3G speeds, but taking away SMS messages and then selling them back to us for $5 bugs me, even if it's not a huge amount. For $5 extra, they should at least increase included messages.

SMS is no longer bundled. So 30 for data plus 5 for the minimum Sms plan.
Yeah, I got that. Which is smart on AT&T's end (but terrible for consumers). There are no other plans that I know of that come with any SMS. And if someone texts you and you don't get any texts, they get more money since you have to pay for each and every SMS message.

Are you sure? I thought that only the minutes are included in the contract. You can always change your data and SMS plans without changing the end of the contract date. But what you said makes sense, I hope you're right.

Yeah, flash for the camera. At 2MP, it's not the best camera in the world. But i make no aspirations as a photographer. I just want it for those situations where a quick pic in a dark enviroment would be nice. And using it as a flashlight would be even nicer. I miss the flashlight finction on my 2003 phone. But i can live without it i guess.
Wireless N would be inspired. After using it on my macbook, B is just a little too slow sometimes, and i dont always have the patience.
