I think it doesn't much matter whether current iPhone owners upgrade or not. Throngs of eager customers are waiting to pounce on the "new, improved" iPhone at its new low price. Basically, everyone who didn't buy an iPhone the first time around is a potential buyer of the $199 iPhone. Personally, I'm happy with the iPhone I already have, but will buy the new model when my clients start needing help with iPhone features that mine doesn't have.

I also live outside of the 3G coverage area, so I will not be upgrading my phone for a while. While the low price is enticing to bu something new, the new higher monthly fee more than offsets that, and personally, I am disappointed that Apple has gone to plastic for the backing of the phone. Shiny or not, it's still plastic, and I love the feel of the aluminum phone in my hand. Since I'll get all the same software upgrades that the new phone will have, I see no point in upgrading at all... And I rarely use GPS for anything, so I won't miss that feature at all.

So, Peter, if you don't use your iPhone as a phone and don't use it for media playback, why keep it? Just curious.

Heh. I was about to comment on the same thing. Peter, reading through your article made me wonder what you actually use your iPhone for. You don't use it as an iPod, phone calls are crappy on it, (at least when you're at home) and the camera is permanently smudged. So?is it just a lousy phone or do you just use it to browse the web? Is it a contact manager for you? Or is it just the super cool OS X interface that makes you hang onto it. I'm curious to know what you find useful about it.

I don't have an iPhone and probably won't for a while, unless I find some truly compelling reason to own one, so I'm asking honestly about that. Is there something that is must have about it for you?

Most of the stock-related sites I've read suggest that other than the normal sell-the-news reaction Apple always (usually) experiences after a much anticipated announcement, the sell-off was more likely related to Steve Jobs' appearance and fear that he might be truly sick (cancer) again. Many investors/traders perceive Apple's health directly related to Jobs'.

One of the TWIT folks said that the price started falling as soon as Jobs walked on stage looking all guant and frail. You'd have to pull up time of day charts to validate that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was shocked at how thin and sickly he looked! It's a bit scary seeing Steve like that. I hope he's just on some crazy diet and not ready to depart us. In fact, it occurred to me that he was on stage very little, and let others run most of the show. I hope that's not a sign that he's weakening.
Please Steve, stick around awhile! the world needs you!

not yet. i just bought an iphone when they came out last year and although i'd love a faster phone, i can wait a year or 18 months until they come out with a 3G with more gigs and probably better more advanced features. I just can't justify buying one every time they come out.

I was going to get one through my friend's friends and family discount but since it's in store activation that will make it a little more difficult if not impossible. I also am looking for a way to hook up my macbook pro to it so I can surf webpages on the go and present them to others without having to buy a EVDO modem or pay at hot spots when I used to be able to do it even through dialup over an old samsung (granted that was at 14400 but it did the job)

I makes me happy knowing I am not alone.
- VERY BIG SMILE -
1. Why does everything always have to cost more? 2. Aren't they happy with the money they are already making?
3. The new phones look cheap!!! You heard me... CHEAP. I am not buying a cheap phone. I will stick to my shiny aluminum phone thank you.
4. In Canada my only option is Rogers which wants a 3 year contract. Are you kidding me? You would have to be a fool to sign a 3 year contract.
In summary, I like my iphone 1.0. I will definitely wait until iphone 3.0 comes out, and if it's made of plastic too... damn I dunno.. I just might still keep my 1.0 phone, it does everything I need. And there is no way I am ever signing a 3 year contract. NO FREAKING WAY!!!

I will stick with my original iphone, GPS doesn't matter to me that much ( have it in car). Since I don't get that great of coverage (1 bar or no service) now where I live/work (silicon valley) a lot of the time, I don't see any advantage.

I agree with several of the other responders that Apple may have made a critical marketing mistake by announcing the new iPhone 3G a month before making it available to Mac-maniacs like me who seem to often purchase the newest, latest version of most of what Mac comes out with before giving it a lot of thought. Had the iPhone 3G been available within a day or two of Jobs' San Francisco extravaganza, I guarantee you I would already own one. Now, I'm 80 percent certain that I'm going to keep the iPhone I have and just upgrade to the 2.0 software, which will be free. Here's why:
First and foremost, I've now had time to cool on the notion that I just have to have 3G.
Second, while the availability of 3G and GPS is great, I now feel it's not enough to warrant an upgrade. There is still no multimedia messaging, no videotaping capabilities, voice command. Shall I go on? These are basics that you can find on even the cheapest cell phones, not to mention features I would use frequently.
Third, although I can well afford it, I am a frugal guy by nature, (despite my occasional impulse Mac gadget buying), and I am having a hard time justifying paying an additional $300 for a phone and nearly $200 or more a year for another AT&T contract to which I'd be committed for another two years. Especially since my current iPhone, which isn't even a year old yet, works just great and does most of what I want it to do anyway, including getting onto the Internet in a reasonable period of time. The things my current iPhone can't do that I'd like it to do most, the new 3G phone won't be able to do either.
Like a number of other iPhone owners on this site, unless 3G users convince me with a great deal of evidence that I really do have to have this phone, I think I'll just stick with the iPhone I have, imbue it with the new free 2.0 software and wait until my AT&T contract expires in less than a year. By then, I am all but absolutely certain Apple will have come out with another generation of iPhone or an improvement to it. And even if it doesn't, I'll just feel more justified getting rid of a phone that I paid almost twice as much for as the 3G sensation.

On reflection one of the key issues is whether applications one uses while away from wi-fi and which have been glacially slow on EDGE, will be available as native apps not needing Internet connectivity except perhaps for updating. I have in mind to do lists, Zagat to go, financial calculators, and others that now are only available (in non-altered iPhones) in web versions.
If the bulk of a particular user's apps under iPhone 2.0 are native, then 3G loses much of its appeal, since the iPhone, as a phone, has always been responsive enough.

I fully agree that Apple made a big mistake in delaying for a month or so the release of the new Iphone. They may have lost alot of Mac-impulse buyers that they would have been waiting in line the day after.

I am sure that there will still be small crowds camping the night before launch to be fiirst in line but I bet they will be smaller then for the original releases.

I am going to laugh if I hear Leo Laporte waited in line again as he was one of the first that returned it for a "blackberry" after the first Apple Iphone "lock down" with much tado. (hot air).

For the rest of us...take advantage of fire sales of 1.0 accessories such as cases.... :D

I honestly do not think that it is worth it for me to upgrade to 3g. my iphone works fine, i dont mind the adapter, and the faster internet does not mean much to me. For basic surfing, the 2g network does fine for me. for mobile working at cafes and wifi hotspots, i have a Vaio UX or a MacBook Pro. I just dont need the geotagging either

The iPhone 3G does sound pretty cool, with the gps and all. But is it worth it to spend $200 to upgrade. Sure its cheaper than the first one you baught, but i read that us original iPhone owners do not get a discount on the 3G. It would be nice if we got a discount for trading in our original iPhones for say at least $100 off on the upgrade.

Also, instead of paying the extra $20 a month for unlimited data AND 200 txt, there will be a charge of $30 which includes unlimited 3G data and a total of 0 txt messages. I guess its understandeable for the 3G network, if it is as good as it sounds. Exactly where is "almost anywhere on the planet" supposed to be?

Overall, im gonna wait to see if this 3G iPhone is all that apple really says it is, and if there are no problems, i will probably upgrade. But for now, i am sticking with the 2G iPhone and will enjoy the 2.0 release.

Does anybody know exaclty when that comes out exactly?

July 11. But are Apple Stores going to have the same hour time frame they had for the 2G model (i.e. close the stores for a brief time and reopen later to sell the 3G)?
