horvatic, good comments but throughout , or I missed it even with Brian, what MAC do you have i.e. the Intel Macs or the G5 type Power MAC? I haven't checked recently but the Apple site indicated awhile back that Power MACs were not compatible and could not import and edit the AVCH.264 HD video. I've been waiting for a software solution but have not found one as yet. Please comment.

HELLLLP!

Argh.

I have to capture footage for a project a shot on my newly acquired
Canon vixia hv 30. however, my FCP v 5.1.4 won't recognize it as a
deck!!!! Ahhhh!!! are they even compatible????? I'm so pissed. I
thought it was just the cable. But I hava an extra firewire but still
didn't work.

I've changed A/V settings accordingly:
sequence preset: HDV 1080i60

capture preset: HDV

Device control preset: HDV firewire

checked my camera settings:

av->dv: off

playback: auto

comp. out: 1080i

dvoutput: hdv/dv

what am i doing wrong??? am i missing anything??

I WOULD BE TRULY INDEBTED IF I SOME GENIUS SHED LIGHT ON THIS.

I WILL BE YOUR SLAVE.

PUHLEEAAZZZZZ.

First thought: Use iMovie to check that the camera is set up properly and Firewire is working.

My professional edit rooms all use the Kona LHe cards and are on FCP 6.0.4 -- I never used FCP before version 6 -- so I don't know if I can help, but I did have trouble recently with the camera not being recognized on my home system. What I did was fire up iMovie to check that I could capture footage via FW. The camera worked with iMovie, so I cursed a bit and went back to FCP. Now it was working also in FCP. Go figure. I use Easy Setups that I'm not sure are available in FCP 5, but I still think it should work for you.

Let me know if you're my slave yet.

Heck ... I just had that happen with an plain ol' Panasonic standard def camcorder ... trying to import to the Macworld recommended Drobo (with four WDC10EACS 1TB drives). In my case, it mean my disk drive was too slow.

I've since had success importing to a Big Disk Extreme+ 1TB (RAID0) unit.

I have followed the set up described here to the letter, and can't get Final Cut to recognize my HV30. Each time it tells me it can't find the device and try re-connnecting (which I have done 50 times in all manner of permutations).

Is there a driver or something that's missing?

I am using Final Cut 6.0.4 on a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro running OSX 10.5.5
