My experience with this has been incredibly inconsistent. I'm writing this as of 5:30 PM EDT.
On my Mac running Leopard 10.5.4, I downloaded and installed the MobileMe software. I now have the new MobileMe icon in Sys Prefs. If I try connecting with my .Mac account I get an immediate failure, telling my name or password may be invalid. I've been trying all day and have had no success getting in.
On another Mac here at work running Tiger 10.4.11, still using the .Mac prefpane, I can log into my .Mac account with no issues. I'm not quite sure what's happening, but it seems the MobileMe software I installed is not letting me connect. It must use a different method of connecting than the old .Mac prefpane, which is odd. It could also be Leopard somehow, but I kind of doubt that. If anything, I'd almost expect a Tiger system to have more trouble connecting than Leopard, but who knows?
On both machines, I'm not able to get to the MobileMe page in any browser. If connect to mac.com I get a maintenance placeholder page. If I connect to me.com, I'm directed to the general info page on MobileMe, which has no login fields to be seen.
In all of this, I can still receive mail OK, so that's once saving grace, but at the moment, this service is effectively neutered.
I can only conclude that Apple has problems on their hands and has botched up this upgrade. I hope they get this worked out soon, because the fallout could be ugly
