Both iTunes/QuickTime have nothing to do with contacts and calendar events. Not their function. Technically IMHO it's possible, but would be ugly decision from software design perspective.
Pretty sure Apple will update Calendar and Address Book. Sooner or later.

When I finally got on, about 10:30 AM, EST, I set up my MacBook and iMac to sync with MobileMe. It took a while for the original sync, but now it's running great. Changes made on Calendar, in Mail, etc. are almost instantaneously showing up on my other computer. Still can't see my "Groups" page because I keep getting the "This service is temporarily unavailable" warning page.
The me.com site is still as S L O W as can be when loading. When I log in, it keeps hanging on this:
and then timing out. I'm still able to use most of the features though.
What exactly is this "getBadgingInfo"? (Not a tech geek here -- just a Mac user and teacher). Overall, the service seems like it will be useful but the rollout is definitely not Apple-like and I am really surprised at the snafus and lack of communication with users about what is going on.

Both of of Macs are at 10.5.4. I got a software update alert on my MacBook that added MobileMe to my system prefs, but is displaying a server error message in that preference pane.
My iMac has not gotten that software update and reports that my software is up to date. The system prefs still show .Mac and reports everything a-ok.
Not sure why I would get an update at one Mac and not the other when both are on same operating system. Did I miss something about only mobile devices getting that update?
This morning I was able to log into MobileMe and I have iDisk functionality (as it is) but nothing else is coming up, such as mail etc.

I can only hope that Mobileme is still in a half-born state. As a long term dot mac user, I was hoping this would inject some value into the proposition but as things stand it runs TERRIBLY on my 1GHz PowerBook G4 with Leopard (OK I know it's old, but every other website on the planet works pretty well), and barely works on Firefox on a PC (another older one admittedly) - failing to load the calendar information at all. In fact I have not yet had one session which was usable. Basically as things stand it is so half-baked it's useless.
Additionally I fully agree that the push thing as advertised is vastly different to the actual experience.
Over the past year I've switched from checking my email on dotmac to gmail as dotmac was positively stone age in comparison and I've switched to using a paper notebook for To Dos as there is still bafflingly and absurdly no "to do" sync. Apple, what is going on here? Add in the fact that my iPod Nano does not sync my calendars EVER due to some sort of bug and we're starting to see a company that has become slapdash.
At least the web bookmarks were useful to me as I have to use shared computers at work and now even they are gone.
I also agree with the comments about Macworld being totally lame in not reporting any of the Mobileme hiccups, if that is what they are.
After two days of this Apple should really offer an extension to the service of existing dotmac customers as a good will gesture. We have paid for this time.
This is really starting to get frustrating.

Calendar subscription is a major feature for us, and I'm disappointed to see this lacking from mobileme. It appears that subscribed calendars are still updating in ical.
I hope this feature gets put in asap, as it would have great benefit to us. Seeing calendars from all members of our organization together in ical is a major benefit. Unless you are using an iphone or touch, push doesn't seem to be of much benefit over ical subscriptions. Perhaps in the future there will be a version of the iphone marketed akin to blackberry where you could just buy a data plan with no voice plan...we would jump on those in a heartbeat. We are locked into VZW (happily so since their network outperforms all others in the North American locations where we do business) for voice but would consider a data-only iphone/touch from any carrier.

I have to agree that so far I'm completely underwhelmed and annoyed. For a new Mac user, this mess is a marketing nightmare. Now my "Contacts" aren't available from Address Book, even though they were there a few hours ago. It just hangs. And Calendar is so buggy it's not funny.
As to the MacWorld "iPhone 3G" frenzy, yeah, it's exciting, for those who can afford one or want one. For those of us who can't or don't though, the lack of news on MobileMe and all things not iPhone is annoying. Maybe change the name to "iPhoneWorld" or "iPhoneFanWorld"? LOL

I am in New York City and as of 1:22 PM EST, Mobile Me is reporting the message below:
MobileMe web applications not yet available.
The MobileMe transition is underway but is taking longer than expected. While core services such as desktop mail, iDisk and sync are available, the new MobileMe web applications are not yet online. Thank you for your patience as we complete the upgrade.

I don't disagree with anything you've said here. My point was simply to illustrate that you can't necessarily make the connection between iCal and Addressbook updates and the push service functionality. While I might agree that this functionality doesn't necessarily belong with Quicktime/iTunes, when you think about this service being available to both Mac and Windows platforms, it should make you question how Apple is going to implement this. Clearly, Apple is not going to issue and update for Outlook, right? There is no Mobile Me software to install, is there? So, that being the case, how else is Apple going to do this? The only thing we do know is that iTunes is being updated to 7.7 in order to use the App Store and iPhone 2.0 software. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
