Wow, this does seem pretty bad. I'm not certain if the breakdown is with Apple or ATT servers, but either way, this is certainly bad.

That said, I'd like to thank all those "guinea pigs" out there that just had to be first to update their iPhone so that the rest of us are alerted to the problem. ;-) I'll definitely wait until things settle down before attempting the upgrade.

MEXICO CITY
Not big crowds but anger amongst frustrated customers linked to mexican carrier TELCEL.
The company decided to offer just "new line" accounts for iPhone. Fortunately some lucky people like me got one !!!

Same problem halfway through the 2.0 upgrade. Called Apple Care and once I said "iPhone", instructions were to try online support or call back later. Waited a minute, called back and it appears Apple is collecting the numbers from calls that have already called in and immediately branching to the "please call back" message -- not even an option to go through the phone tree. Tried calling from the other line in our home and shazam! Call went right through!! This time, instead of trying to reach technical support, I tried the "Activation" option -- and immediately got kicked to AT&T.

Instructions from AT&T are to leave the iPhone plugged in, even if it's all day -- if you unplug it, apparently you go to the back of the line of all those trying to access the iTunes Store.

Yes, you're cell phone service is dead and unavailable until the 2.0 upgrade completes! The AT&T operator did make a test call to verify that at least the voice mail service is working, so you are able to access voice mail messages from a phone other than your iPhone.

Credits for lost phone service while we wait? According to AT&T, that issue is a hot topic and AT&T is working with Apple to see what they're going to do the for the thousands of existing iPhone owners who have gotten hosed as innocent bystanders to the 3G orgy!!

I hope Apple discovered it was the dumb idea to release the 3G and release the iphone 2.0 upgrade on the same day. THey could have moade it a lot easier by releasing 2.0 last week or even a few days ago. Got to spread it out. This made NO sense putting them on the same day. Its not like they were still working on the 2.0 update until yesterday. They had the 3G phones with the 2.0 update for weeks so they could ship them out. Bright people at Apple but not bright enough.

i'm obviously one of the lucky few. I began my upgrade within minutes of it being available, and while it took about an hour, it went through without a hitch. So i'm now the proud owner of a Vintage iPhone 2.0, and couldn't be happier.

Intolerable? How about impatient (on your part).
With the new activation heavily dependent on ATT (because of in-store activation), you should have expected the possibility of problems, especially with all the hype surrounding this release (and it seems greater than the 1.0 release).
Now, after calling you impatient, I should point out that I "had to" download the 2.0 update from the "unofficial" server at Apple yesterday (so who's really impatient:-). I also had some problems upgrading and re-activating my iPhone BEFORE the official launch. I can only imagine that today the problems will be 10X yesterday, when it took me only three times to get it to activate.

I am a very understanding and patient guy...

1. I can understand that there will be a line of people
2. I can understand that there are limited quantities
3. I can understand that there will be delays

What I don't understand and am frustred by is the fact that AT&T was not prepared.

I went to a Fremont AT&T store this morning at 7:00am. I was the 70th person in line. When the manager came out he handed everyone a checklist of what to have when you get into the store.

Me: "How many do you have"
Him: "I'm not really sure"
Me: "How is that possible?"
Him: "I don't have exact figures"
Me: "Is it that you know, but can't tell me"
Him: "I'm not really sure"

At this point, I'm a little frustrated. I told him

Me: "Look, I don't mind if I don't get one - I just don't want to wait in line and find out you are sold out"

Him: "When levels are low, I will come out and advise you"

What a crock....anyway...

After 2 hours, he finally comes out and starts telling us the they are running low. For the life of me, I can understand why they wouldn't just tell us.

I have to agree with every single word you wrote.

Having all upgraders activating the same day that the 3G buyers are activating? INSANITY.

Bad, bad, bad.

you would think apple and AT & T would have at least learned something after the first iphone launch, but apparently not. problems with activation again, rude at & t folks. if apple only knew how they treat their customers they would never be in bed with them. the stories from my friends from last year were horror stories about how rude at & t were and this year seems to be no better. try calling a AT & T store now to ask about anything to do with the iphone you get a rude service person who seems to be shocked at all the activity, as if the iphone was not going to be busy. why couldn't apple avoid all this by just doing a simple step down order of selling the phone as well as activation. first, give the priority to anyone who already has an iphone and wanted to upgrade, then a week later, all others who want the phone., and why release the old iphone upgrade and release the new iphone on the same day inviting an overload. is all the press and crazier stories worth that much to selling the device? It just makes no sense. and why did apple not learn a lesson from how they overloaded FedX with the release of Leopard? They could not even get the device out overnight because they went so crazy with it..all this could simply be avoided. now they have a glitch and an activation problem and 1000's standing in line.....

I've trying to upgrade since about 10am Eastern. It's now 3pm. I have no idea how many times I've tried to the "click on iPhone, click on Music, click on iPhone" move. It is just not working!

Sundoggy,

Not to start a war, but seriously, I think you've got it backwards. The consumer isn't the person who should anticipate potential problems. That is Apple and AT&T's responsibility. The consumer should only have to anticipate that the multi-billion dollar enterprises who concocted this process would have it figured out before they inflict it on their most loyal customers.

The other lesson to be learned here is DON'T SELL SOMETHING BEFORE IT'S READY....they should never have sold the iphone while EDGE was the only service that AT&T had only to upgrade to 3G just a mere year later..why not wait? of course the answer is......they wanted to make more money this way...snag em and then snag them again....but why, why do all this on the same day? you're asking for a crash........
