I am very very very disappointed about the lack of inventory for a launch this huge. I waited in line beginning at 5:15am this morning in the Canyon Country store in California, and I was 28th in line. By 7:00am there were 100 people behind me. The line started moving at 8:00am when they opened, and at 9:30 when I was 10 people from the door, the AT&T rep came out and said they only had ONE 16GB iPhone left. With 2 colors of the 16gb, you are telling me that a store only got 20 phones in stock??!!! That is freaking pathetic. They said "OH we have plenty of 8GB phones, but we're sorry. Why are they keeping this so secret, they refused to tell us at the beginning of the day how many they had so many people wasted their time for no reason because the store only got so many...FREAKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!
If they weren't so damn worried about jailbreaks, and just let everyone buy their phones and take them home, this would have gone so much smoother...I"m already an AT&T customer, and anyone who already is with them should have had that option to buy the phone and go home!!!!
So now I have to wait, and that sucks!!!

Went this morning to get a new iPhone at my local AT&T outlet. However, they were only taking orders. They said, it would take 7 to 10 days in which to get the phone. I walked out!

Here is the huge difference between AT & T and Verizon. Verizon cares about it's price packages and their phones, AT & T only cares about it's packages...the phone don't matter to them, iphone included..if only apple had worked with Verizon, things would be much better...

1220 (PDT)....iPhone v2.0 upgrade completed....2 hours and 45 minutes.....3 calls to Apple Care (see prev post -- first two were unceremonious "call back later", third dumped me to AT&T as soon as I tried the Tech Support option for "Activation").....27 "click iTunes Store, click back on iPhone" cycles......

Phone is restored to original "out of the box" icon configuration plus whatever settings were backed up during the upgrade.

Photos, music and videos required a disconnect and reconnect to initiate the first "synch".

Oh yeah, and I have cell service once again............

Off to spend the afternoon exploring -- after all, Apple Care has been assuring me for two months that with this v2.0 upgrade, my old iPhone will be "almost the same as the new 3G". What? You can't add the 3G and GPS improvements with a software upgrade? Why those sneaky little corporate peons. They lied? I'm shocked!!!!

Yep! Same thing, I also did the same thing (walked). 7 - 10 days is not an option for people that want one on release date. The only thing good I have to say is I already have an IPhone, albiet, a first generation one. I think I may wait a while before I upgrade to the new software. You know, after hearing about the latest Boondogle with the 2.0 software and all.

Have been trying all day and can not connect to the itunes store to upgrade. Server problem keeps popping up, "store not available now, please try later." It is 3:40pm now

Having been though the line at my local Apple Store twice, my AT&T Store once, and having spent nearly 45 minutes on the phone with AT&T, it's not been a fun day. Most of the problems I witnessed were AT&T-related issues, not Apple issues.

Yep. This launch sucked. We were at an AT&T store in Brighton, MI (in the fastest growing county in MI). I was about 30th in line. They had only 15 phones! They said the rest of us could pre-order one and pay right then and there. Our phone should be in in 5-10 working days. But wait, it gets better. They also told us that we could come back each day, and if there were phones in stock would could buy one and cancel our pre-order. That's right. We were in line and paid up front, but new phones coming into the store were not going to be allocated to us.
Add to that that I switched to AT&T 28 days ago. At first they said that because they already gave me a "discount" on a phone, I was not eligible for the "discount" price of $299. I'm not sure how a $30 phone equates to a $200 discount, but in AT&Ts mind it does. They finally relented since I was under the 30 day wire. It is like AT&T is working as hard as they can to !#@$ off their existing customers.
Finally, I went home and tried to activate MobileMe on my Mac so at least THAT would be ready when I did get my iPhone, and it keeps crashing. This whole rollout has sucked from the get-go. It feels more like a Microsoft-GM partnership than and Apple-AT&T one. Mr. Jobs dropped the QC ball on this one.

Sorry Apple and ATT you dropped the ball.

1) Customers should have been given a choice of either waiting in the traditional (ridiculously long line) or pre-order/pay.
2) My guess is that you could have even charged 20 dollars addition for the pre-order and people would pay it.
3) When a customer pre-orders, some info could have been taken to activate the phone BEFORE the customer picks it up and this should have been done via on line securely.
4) People in the typical line should be given appointment cards and an est of time when to return to the store (say after the first 50 in line and then all others afterwards. As each phone requires employee assistance to activate that's akin to an appointment in all respects.

As for servers going down... did people expect differently? Forced activation at a store would, based on past history of the lines, near guarantee problems. I feel bad for the customer, the Apple and AT&T employee who got stuck with this retail debut. For me, I am going to wait a long while before considering purchasing the 3G iPhone so that I don't wait in lines and who knows any kinks in the software(s) can be worked out and AT&T will rethink its obscene contract pricing (yes I am aware of the discount on the phones due to AT&T subsidies). What is otherwise a neat product is heavily mired with AT&T charging more over the long run for merely competing with other providers. - Shameful.

Has anyone gotten to the point where their phone can actually connect to AT&T? I activated it with iTunes (not an easy task to get past the error, but keep trying), now I can use my phone over WiFi, but I have no service. Do I need to put my old SIM card in? if not, how long does it take for the iPhone to get service?
