Crowds, activation delays at San Francisco iPhone launch

I agree. I switched from Verizon to AT&T because I wanted an iPhone, which is I'm sure what Apple promised AT&T would happen in order to get them to carry the phone. I have regretted the move ever since. When I DO get my iPhone, the thing better wash my cats and clean my underwear in addition to making calls. Otherwise, I'm not sure it will have been worth it.

I have an iPhone that I updated. Fooling around with it, I pulled the sim card out went in and out of the emergency call number pad a few times, and my phone unbricked itself. When I stuck the sim card back in it took a few minutes, but it activated itself without iTunes. When I then reconnected to my computer, it restored the data that had been backed up during the update process. It still keeps trying to get to the apple servers on iTunes though, but it's fucntional again. Everything on the phone itself seems to work fine.

You know, this seems to have a déjà vu feel to it. Does anyone remember the original launch? I remember staying up until 3:00 a.m. and making multiple calls to get an answer that due to the tremendous surge, my phone would not activate until the next day.
That's why I took the dare and did my 2.0 conversion before it was showing early last night (thanks to a Mac Rumor post). At that time, everything worked great and my phone is working great now with the App store installed and a few free Apps in place.
A word of caution - I have read that no one should attempt to "upgrade" to 2.0 right now because the servers are just about to crash.

I arrived at a local AT&T store at 8:00 am this morning. I was the 24th person in line. They only had 20 phones total, half of which were the 16Gb , which sold out first. The last 9 people to purchase phones had to get 8GB. I will wait several days before I try again!

Does any of this suprise anyone. I love my Apple products but when you let AT&T take over the authorization your asking for trouble. I plan of getting in Iphone but I'll wait for all the kinks to get worked out first. Apple is screwing the AT&T stores though. The Denver area stores are already sold out while large numbers of people continue to sit in 95 degree temperatures to get their hands on one.
This time I have to give Apple an F for rollout and AT&T couldn't get any lower anyway. I hate the provider but I like the product.

All this confusion is actually an index of the level of interest and excitement over the iPhone and the software upgrade. There were some mis-estimations of effort, but nothing serious.
It took a while for my phone to hook up on iTunes, but it just now did. Once it re-syncs my music and videos, I'm jumping onto the App Store to download some goodies!

Hello you early adopters.
Welcome to the real world which you seemed to have divested yourselves from in an aura of Applefog.
Regardless of how Apple dresses itself up, remember it's a business.....Now I am as loyal to Apple as the next Mac user so I am looking for a reason for this fiasco of an Apple roll out (which is remarkably reminiscent of something Microsoft might do). One has to look a little closer as to the mechanisms involved in the activation process, esp at AT&T (or O2 in UK).
Ask yourselves, what kind of computer and software are the serves for these companies running. Bingo! Had your epiphany?
Well regardless, I suspect that by this evening this morning's exercise in the blind leading the blind will have resolved (remarkably UNlike Microsoft mediated events) and all will be rosy and sunny
Back to the Applefog....

Up in Victoria BC, Canada, the Rogers store I went to had two people working and only about 24 phones, I was number 11 in line and they were processing 4 people an hour until the computers froze up and they could only take our order, our money and say they would phone us when they could activate the phones. Talk about being prepared, boy scouts so a better job.

Yesterday evening, I happened across a C|NET RSS feed (if memory serves) describing where (link provided) and how (a handful of step-by-step instructions) to download the new iPhone software and install it before it's release today. Like any overeager Apple enthusiast, I decided to try my luck.
By about 7:15 p.m. ET last night, July 10, using my Intel G5, I had upgraded iTunes to v7.7 and my 2G iPhone to v2.0 AND downloaded 46 FREE and/or for-purchase applications from the Apps Store. By 12:30 a.m. this morning (just over 5 hours later) I had to plug my iPhone back into the charger because I had used nearly 4/5 of the battery trying out EVERY download and amusing the heck out of myself with Enigmo, Super Monkey Ball and MY personal favorite so far, Cro-Mag Rally.
As far as real applications go, Remote just, well it "just works!" And, having tested the QuickVoice recorder several times today at approx. 30 minutes per clip, I fully expect to use my 2G iPhone tomorrow to interview Science Records' BEAT UNION at the Vans' Warped Tour '08 in Miami.
First, I'll call the TM (tour manager) once I'm off the highway. Then, I'll use AIM to text him that I'm at the gate with my 'posse'. Upon entering Bicentennial Park, I'll meet Beat Union, using Notes to take, ahem, notes, QuickVoice to record the band member's responses to my witty and/or pointed queries and, although I'll have my trusty SONY point-and-click, I'm sure I'll snap a couple of 2MPX images with my iPhone -- just so I can email the people whom I know it will make most jealous!
=^ )
This begs the question to all of you users having problems: Do you often burn yourself taking the bread out of the toaster once it pops up?

I went to the Apple store in Arlington, VA this morning and arrived at 630 and was probably the 150th person in line. The line doubled to at least 300 by 8 AM. A girl at the front of the line arrived last night in hopes of selling her spot. With 2 minutes to go (I happened to walk up front to take a photo when they opened the door) she had not takers. She wanted $150, I gave her $40 and she took it.
I was the 2nd person to leave the store which was about 830 AM and had no problems with activation. The only slow down was because the price came up at list price of $499 and the employee didn't know she had to keep going through the activation process with the credit card and the price would drop at the end. Over all, I'm please. I was able to go home and sync the phone with iTunes without delay.
I even managed to go to the DMV, and finish packing before leaving for the airport at noon. I didn't think it was possible. Thanks to the girl who camped out with her sister for a measly $40.00.

I attempted to secure an iphone for my wife this morning and it was a disaster. I don't mind the long lines, the long waiting times or even the delays. What I do mind is the lack of information that is shared with the general pubilc along with the inability for AT&T and Apple to react and provide alternative solutions.
In Fremont, CA (AT&T Store), there were about 100 people in line by 7:00am. I went to the front of the store looking for an AT&T employee and none was to be found. When the store manager finally came out I asked him how many units they had. He said that he did not know. I let him know that I won't be dissapointed if there is a small amount, I simply want to know if I am wasting my time. He told me I am not able to share that information w/you. I said, are you serisouly going to let us all stand here thinking that everyone has a chance at the phone. He said that everyone will have an opportunity to purchase a phone.
Thanks when a little alarm went off.
I asked him, so if everyone can purchase a phone - are you saying that everyone will take a phone home. He said no, everyone will be allowed to purchase a phone but it there is no gurantee that you'll take one home today. I started to spread this information to everyone in the back of the and many people started to get upset and frustrated but were more or less wiling to wait to see what will happen
Well...after two hours...yep you got that right two hours, the manager finally came out again. He started to tell everyone that they are running low on units but that everyone will be able to purchase a phone. When folks asked him how many they had he would not say. He simply stated that everyone could buy a phone. Questions about the activation process were also not provided with a direct answer, instead the manager said. We have every agent working digilently to get everyone processed in a timley manner.
What a crock...if they were having activation issues or whavever then they should MAN UP and be up front about it. People will be patient and understanding if they are provided with information.
This was abysmal.
