Twenty cool third-party iPhone apps

The thing about Apple is that it consistently has areas where it stubbornly refuses to budge. Has any iPhone user checked whether synching with a Mac allows synching of todo's. I wouldn't be surprised if, even in version 2.0, Apple has not budged on that one. Ipod users have been crying for replaceable batteries since Generation 1, and it's never come, so don't expect it on the iPhone. Apple has a sense of arrogance where, if they think it's best, there is nothing hordes of users can do to ever change Apple's mind, e.g. when they removed the matte-screen antiglare option from their iMac line of computers. A whole new user segment -- iPhone users -- is going to learn about that stubborn streak of Apple's.

Yes. It is quite amazing that there is no still no snycing of To Dos or Notes with v.2.0 software. This would be the easiest thing in the world to put right and one of the most obvious I would have thought.
And another thing, it seems like subscriptions to calendars are not syncing to MobileMe - why?

Despite of all critics so far I think there will be developed a lot of cool and useful things in the near future. The iphone with the app store is the basis.
For me the coolest thing is that it is now possible to play 360 degrees cubic panoramas on your iphone. Something what was invented by Apple (QTVR) but totally ignored by Apple in the last years as you can see it cannot be played on your iPhone !!
But thanks to smart inventors now it can be delivered free of charge and even better than the original QTVR . Check the app store for PangeaVR
A sample movie showing the iphone spinning panoramas can be seen here:

What's missing is an iPhone app for people with diabetes which would allow them to record and track their diabetes data: blood sugar levels, insulin shots, medication, meals, exercise, etc. With the iPhone, you could e-mail the data directly to your doctor or download it to a computer for detailed analysis. Such an app would make recording, analyzing and communicating diabetes data more convenient. It could even lead to improved control of diabetes for some people. The potential market for this app would be 1 to 2% of all iPhone users world wide.

The people complaining about the iPhone and iPhone App store are the same people who looked at the original telephone and said "why on Earth would you want to call the guy in the next room? Why not just yell?" Same people who looked at the original wax cylinder phonograph and said "why on Earth would you want to record music? You can only put five minutes on that cylinder, and you can't put it near a fire? This is stupid.
The Mac has always been about enabling technology that allows people to get past limitations. Don't like messing with .dll files and the registry? Go Mac. Don't like constant interface intrusions? Go Mac. Don't like a funky inconsistent music player interface? Go iPod. Don't like rendered browsers on your phone? Go iPhone. Don't like ridiculously poor applications on your smartphone? Let's empower developers, energize consumers to ask for something better, and put tools into the hands of people who will go out and make amazing things. Go iPhone 3G.
