Nice review. I'm about to get a 3g iphone as a company phone. I'm looking forward to the experience. My old sony k700i has a cracked screen but still works. I'd like a better camera but to be honest I never used the one on my sony but I did use the flash as a light. My biggest gripe is the email which will be a pain as I have lots of accounts. The good thing though is that's something Apple can fix in an upgrade. At the end of the day the thing that sets the iPhone apart from the others is the OS which generally I'd say is way better than anything else.

Nice review.
I would add two missing features to the list:
1- Synchronized notes
2- To-do list

Thank you for spending your weekend in putting this information out for your readers -- very thorough review albeit missing the one-upmanship of tossing your own IP3G farther than your PC colleagues to see if you could best them by breaking yours in just two throws! :-)
With the new Exchange ActiveSync addition, what is the impact on Sync Services? How do the following turn out: multiple calendars in iCal or Entourage; multiple email accounts in Mail or Entourage; and, different sets of contacts residing locally in Address Book and peripherally on an Exchange server?

This is the best iPhone 3G review I read. I waited patiently and I didn't buy the first version but I think it is now time to get one.
In fact, I never had a smartphone before because until now, I simply didn't had the use for it. By september, I will spend more than 3 hours a day commuting but I will have a new best friend.

Seriously, does Apple bribe the press to not mention the fact that the iPhone doesn't have a To Do application, or that of the many To Do apps (mostly crappy) now in the iPhone App store, none of them can sync To Dos with those you have in iCal and Mail on your Mac??
I smell bribery because this is a pretty glaring hole in Apple's whole "Digital Life" fantasy-land sales pitch, and yet NO journalist has recently cited the lack of To Dos in any iPhone 3G reviews I've read. Not the NY Times, not Engadget, not the Wall Street Journal, not USA Today. Sure, you guys fret endlessly about no MMS and Stereo Bluetooth, but apparently not being able to sync the To Dos from Apple's own desktop applications to Apple's own phone isn't newsworthy.
Really, are you guys just a bunch of overgrown kids that have so much time on your hands that you don't need to make a To Do list? Does this just seem like a non-issue to you? Sadly, because you refuse to cite this appalling lack of functionality, Apple is likely to keep neglecting the feature, and screwing its own customers who use To Dos in its other products, and wonder why the hell they can't use the same data on their Apple phones.
Thanks for nothing!

Bonjour,

I agree 100% with you. The question is: could we act?

I posted the 2 missing features at http://www.apple.com/feedback/. If everyone does the same, Apple could listen to us...

Great review. I eMailed it to my dad. His Treo died last week and is looking to replace it.

As a footnote I thought Macworlds' coverage of the release of the new iPhone pretty damn good. Especially all the mini reviews of Apps. I cannot wait for reviews of more Apps especially Peter Cohens' look at the games.

Very good work, indeed! And it is amazing that you also found time to reply in the forum to all kinds of confusing questions from us ignorant ones:) Let us hope they pay you well - I mean, really, really well!

Doesn't the iCal sync set up your to-do lists?

Low-quality camera; no video-recording support; no built-in voice dialing; limited Bluetooth functionality; no support for text selection, cut, copy and paste.

Of these cons, only one (the camera) is presumably limited by hardware. That's great news because any of those can be "fixed" with 2.1.

While you realize "that [your] backyard is located somewhere in China’s Yellow Sea"... did you pay attention that you can "finger write" Chinesse characters.
(I do not have an iPhone 3G, I just read that.)
For me, it is not so important as for the language (I do not write/not yet need to write Chinesse) if not for the whole new possibilities... from handwriting recognition to nice-correcting sketching.

I don't understand comments regarding the poor quality of the iPhone's camera!?!?! Of the many cell phones with cameras I've witnessed, the iPhone is MILES ahead in quality. You mean to tell me there are many that surpass its quality? I'd love to see ONE!

Great review on the mostly iPhone 3G hardware. Looking forward to the software review. Thank you, Mr. Jason Snell.
