Dock connector cable doesn't work for audio

I have an iPod jack in my car and I use a cable that has a dock connector on one end (for better sound quality obviously), I've noticed that when I plug in my new iPhone 3G it doesn't work for sound... the music just comes out of the iPhone's speaker.

Anyone know if the dock port is somehow different on the iPhone than an iPod? So that it requires a different dock connector audio cable?

Same problem here. I finally ended up using the crappy analog mini jack.
