This "lack of communication" within AT&T is not limited to iPhone use. If you are a former BellSouth DSL subscriber, you may be charged $7.95 more for service offerred to similar AT&T customers (unless you are just getting the lowest available speeds).
The reasons I was given included:
1. Different costs of living exist across the nation;
2. I am a former BellSouth customer and the systems have not been fully integrated, so there is a price difference (avoided if they just gave me a $7.95 credit every month...);
3. You pay a different price for gas at the same gas station based on the day you purchase gas (I kid you not they made this analogy...);
4. and others.
AT&T is not MaBell.

I hope this is something AT&T is going to do in the future...would be a great benefit since their 2G network is soooooooo slow. I downloaded the network test app from the iPhone store and it is shocking. I knew the network was slow but I didn't realize I was connecting at 10 - 20kb most of the time! Slower than dial-up :-(
