first iphone...how do I start?

I have one of the old iphones. I haven't been able to use it yet because my operating system is 10.3.9 . I took the phone to the apple store because I was told they could ge me started on one of their computers, but when I got there, they said it could not be done because of security reasons. When I bought the phone at the ATT store, they said all I needed was the newest version of i tunes which I have. How can I use my iphone? can I use a friends computer to get started?
