The issue that's being overlooked here is the massive problem that users of the new iPhone 3G are having with 3G connections - that is what Macworld should be writing about.
Head on over to Apple's forums - one of the biggest threads ever is running on this topic, and the general consensus is that the device is seriously flawed. I'm in the UK, on O2, and I have switched off 3G in order to get some kind of viable service - even then, my gen 1 iphone performs much better on calls. I know of 4 people who have returned their phones in disgust. I hardly ever get more than 1 bar of signal, and I have had numerous dropped calls - something I have literally hardly ever had in the last 5 years on other phones.
Here's the test to do - it's unequivocal, and anyone can do it if they have another 3G device...
Place the iphone 3G next to another recent device running on the same network. When I do that here in my house, a Nokia 3G phone shows full signal and makes crystal-clear calls. My new shiny iPhone shows 1 bar, and the call quality is terrible. Most incoming calls go directly to voicemail.
Come on Macworld - engage in some real journalism here and put some pressure on Apple to respond to this issue: it is affecting so many people it's incredible. Seriously, the forum thread on Apple's forums has at time of writing this, 36,000 views!!!
