Is there any way to stop getting email notifications by default when I post a comment on a story?

Yes! Here's how:

Step 1: Sign in to Macworld.com
Step 2: Click "Community" or go directly to http://forums.macworld.com
Step 3: Go to "Your Stuff" and into "Preferences". Set all Email Notifications to "No".
Step 4: Go to "Your Stuff" and to "Email Notifications". Click the box to the right of all notifications you have already set, and then press "Remove Selected Notifications". Do this until all are cleared.

Once you have done this, you will get no more notifications of updates to message board threads.

Thanks Kellie. I was looking in Email Notifications. (If you guys have control over the software, adding a "To change the defaults, use Preferences" there might help people.)

(Is there any way I can get my join date fixed, too? I was unable to log into this system since the site changeover. My old handle was sdf. I don't care about the post count, but I hate looking like I just joined!)

Yeah, its a little strange because you have to turn off the notifications in two places. One place is for turning off the ones you already have set, and the other is to prevent any more from getting set automatically. Thanks for the suggestion -- I'm not sure how much we can do, but we do want to make it an easy and fun experience for everyone.

The join date is something that I don't have control over, as it's tied into our registration database. Why can't you get in with your old account? I just looked it up (it's still in the system) and I don't see a reason why you shouldn't be able to. Let me know if you'd like me to help with that.

Someone (you maybe?) said in an email it was because I was using a spamcop.net email address. It looks like I can log in, but as soon as I try to do anything it logs me out again.

Wasn't me, but I think I know who it was. Let me check on it.

You are totally right, and I learned something today. :)

I can put in a request to change your registered on date to that of your old account. I'm not sure it can be done, or how much work it is, though.

Don't worry about it. It's not important enough to spend any more time on. :)
