evony, you can force the iPhone into recovery mode by following these instructions. I've done that twice now when I got stuck at the Apple logo. (Interestingly, I was able to sync images from the phone, even when it was stuck on the logo screen!).

thank you thank you rob! I was hoping someone here might have an answer for me. I searched the support pages for hours and couldn't find anything to help me--I guess I wasn't using the right search combination. So far it's worked like a charm--now it's putting all my stuff back on the phone, so hopefully it will be back to normal in a few minutes!
how sad is it that I feel completely naked when my iphone isn't functioning--I actually had to run out to the store to buy an alarm clock so that I wouldn't be late for work tomorrow since I use my phone for everything!

One thing I noticed right off the bat after installing the update was that iTunes FINALLY showed all the Apps I've purchased on the iPhone. Previously, only the ones I bought on my laptop (and then installed) were showing up in iTunes. Not sure if this improvement is from the iPhone 2.01 or iTunes 7.7.1. Did anyone else have this problem? When I had to to do a restore recently, none of the iPhone purchased Apps were installed and I had to go and re-download them. Pain in the booty, especially since iPhone installed Apps take an oddly long time to finish and slow down the phone significantly when they are doing it.
I'm also finding that backups now take FOREVER. Literally a half hour or longer. Very frustrating.
I'm hoping that these are truly bug fixes as I am having freezes and crashes, though not near as frequently as my Treo used to have- but it's getting there! Please Apple! Don't let the iPhone turn into the legendarily unstable Treo!

I have a 1st gen 16GB iphone which was working without problems prior to the update. Everything seems to be working fine, although it takes several minutes for the number of bars indicator to ram up to 3 bars. It initially shows no bars, then about 2-3 minutes later the 3 bars show up. I haven't tried making a call immediately after turning the phone on. I must admit that phone reception is somewhat iffy in this area of Clearwater, Florida, so it just may be due to the fluctuating signal strength of the area. I'm now contentedly listening to Steely Dan's "Ricki Don't Lose that Number" from the "A Decade of Steely Dan" album.

2.0.1 fixed the horrible lag time in accessing Contacts.
Other items also fixed, per AppleInsider.com
-You can now drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
-Contacts are now more responsive.
-After installing 2.0.1, each successive backup is much faster.
-Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone's reception "bars" while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
-Keypad loads quicker.
-Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
-Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.

Since July 11th I am on my second 3G iphone. Both the old and now the new keep dropping calls. I'm outside at what should be strong signal locations and for no reason I'll be on the phone talking to a client and the phone will just go dead. The screen is usually dark when I bring it down from my ear.
The first time I had this problem I took it back to the AT&T store where I purchased it and they put in a new sim card. That didn't help so I took it to an Apple store and they ran some tests and said they would replace it with a brand new unit because the percent of drop calls was about 8% and that was too high.
I've never been an AT&T customer but I live in Raleigh, NC which should have great coverage for 2G as well as 3G signals. i'm calling about 5 miles from the center of downtown Raleigh or about 12 miles out. Either way the signal should be strong.
I probably dropped a dozen calls within a 2 hour period today alone.
if this is the type of service I'm going to be getting from this phone and AT&T I'm switching back to Altel. I never had dropped calls but my Treo 750 wx died twice on me. And I'm not abusing any of this equipment. The iPhone is in a semi-hard case that clips to my belt.
it just defies logic. Is anyone experiencing the same kind of problem?

I had a bit of a scare. My phone is on airplane mode since I am traveling out of the country. When I ran the update it said my SIM card was locked and would not authorize the phone. I had to restart in restore mode and restore the phone before the update took. All is better now, but that was not a happy message to get!

Bricked my phone. Nothing special installed, mac fairly vanilla too. Anyway, download was 80+% through the update install, when it said "Unknown error". Restarted in recovery mode. On attempt to restore, got "unknown error 6" and simply won't restore... Off to the apple store.
UPDATE
Per the troubleshooting instructions moved it to another USB port, it was then able to restore (huh? its a brand new Mac Pro!). Unclear what the difference between ports...
