I live in the heart of Washington, DC and I am stunned at how bad the ATT reception is here. I have had Sprint and Verizon and had virtually no problem with dropped calls. Now I experience it in almost every call with ATT. I had a friend with ATT several years ago who, every time we talked, dropped the call at least once and I just assumed that the issue would have been resolved. Wrong. And I also have a lot of difficulty just placing a call -- it will repeatedly report "call failed" without even beginning to ring, just an instantaneous "call failed" when I hit the button. Maddening. And simply unbelievable to me that this has been the case with ATT for years and they haven't yet figured out how to fix it. I've heard it's great elsewhere, so why can't they get it right in our Nation's Capitol, or other areas that are clearly problematic? I love my iphone, but this has certainly put a big damper on my excitement.

Can you imagine the exodus from AT&T when their exclusive contract with Apple ends? Perhaps they can sell those electronic countdown key chains to mark the event. I can't wait.

No kidding! The saddest part isn't even that their quality of service doesn't seem to be improving very quickly -- but rather, in some cases it's actually getting worse! I used to have AT&T, and when their reception in my three level townhouse went from usable on the second and third floors to spotty at best on the top floor, even with the cell phone glued to the window facing towards the cell tower... I promptly gave up any hopes of upgrading to an iPhone, and switched to Sprint. I don't know if I'll still be on Sprint or if I will have switched to Verizon by the time Apple's exclusive contract finally expires... but I know I won't be on AT&T again any time soon.

People who claim this article is only whining about cell phones isn't paying attention. Peter is saying AT&T sucks compared to Verizon. I myself switched from Verizon to AT&T so I could get the iPhone, and I desperately miss Verizon's amazing coverage. I never got dropped calls, garbled voices, or similar problems. I even had good reception where all my other friends with other carriers had NO reception.
We're not new to cell phones when we complain about dropped calls. We merely miss the old days with awesome Verizon coverage.

When we moved to our present home, we had to switch Analog carriers as ATT was not in this area, so I went with Alltel - ok (sometime) reception. Finally Digital cells came out and I switched to Sprint while @ our sons place in Texas - Not so good at our home. Switched to US Cellular - still not too good. Went to Verizon - a little better but cell phone would have feedover of others talking and made it difficult to hear (they switched phones 3 times and still same problem). Then to T-Mobile - fair communications at home BUT terrible when away from the Interstate Hwy's. Finally to Bellsouth (Cingular) and now to ATT - only 2 to 3 bars on both wife and my other phones + iPhone. Not only this but only dial-up out here unless you go with Satellite, as I've done. DSL - 1.5 miles from house is an optic cable carrying data to the ATT cell tower that's 3.5 miles from me. ATT stinks as do all the other carriers. I the great Industrial Capitalists - conservatives have us over another barrel beside the Iraq $7 Trillion in debt, we now have.Of course FCC will not force these companies to live up to their conglomerent agreements that allowed them to join together to be a bigger robber! Enough said!

I live in Alaska. Right now, I'm out in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE for Army training--and I STILL have really good AT&T service (Edge network) on my amazing iPhone 3G! What's up with all the complaining?!? Seriously...computers used to be the size of large rooms--remember that.

AT&T is a fair to good service in my area. However, for my iPhone, it's not good at all! 4 out of 10 is what I would give it.

So my issue isn't so much AT&T specifically, as it is AT&T with the iPhone! Where the true problem lies...who knows.

My iPhone applications (Apple part of the device) works flawlessly, everytime. The only issues I have is with visual voice mail, full bars that go away completly when trying to make a call only to come back to full bars 30 seconds or so later. It's almost like the phone is toying with me. ha! ok...it's not really funny when I'm trying to make a call.

I was so impressed with the iPhone, I bought a Powerbook. Apple is proud of their computers. WOW! $$$$

You were so impressed with an iPhone that you bought a Powerbook? Apple hasn't made the Powerbook in years. If I was impressed with a current product I wouldn't automatically assume years old products were the same. You seem to imply it was a lot of money. I would assume older Powerbooks would be a bargain, these days. WOW ????.

I agree, I've been with Verizon for many years, no problems. AT&T iPhone, many problems.
