Spoke with a Genius at Apple. They told me not to waste my time with back ups. Once sync starts and then changes to backup just x it out. There is no need to back up Apps each time. Much quicker. Have not really seen any changes with latest update. have had issues with dropped calls at times as well as gargling and echo. Live in 3g saturated area.

I normally cancel backups when doing a normal sync as I can't see the point of them especially when they take several hours. The problem is I'm currently updating to 2.0.2 and there is no option to cancel the backup process. Why it needs to do this is beyond me as it's extremely frustrating to have my phone out of action for the rest of the day just so that I can update the firmware.

@Foosh9 - I've had an iPhone since November, 2007 and have never had a problem listening to voicemails through a bluetooth headset.
Also, I have only had some minor stability issues since upgrading to 2.0 and 2.0.1. Sometimes it seems to get really slow - especially if the iPod is playing and I switch to contacts or the phone. Also, sometimes SMS input is REALLY bogged down. Overall, though, no major problems. I've not noticed any degradation of reception and was fairly pleased with my iPhone reception in general.

sheilanolan,
If your phone is still in the process of doing a backup, just yank it and try again later. You won't lose anything. Besides, if you receive a call during the process, you'll probably want to pull it from the dock and you'll have to cancel the process anyway. You're not in danger of screwing things up unless it's actually installing the new software.
It's also quite possible that the back up process is hung up and going nowhere. I tried installing 2.0.2 late yesterday afternoon and the progress bar didn't move for over 45 minutes. A call came in, I answered, and decided to try installing later in the evening. The entire process the second time only took about 20 minutes.

After the first full day running 2.0.2, it feels almost as though I have a new and improved battery inside my 3G iPhone. Not that it would take much to improve the per-charge life over what I was getting with 2.0.1. And that is with all features enabled. I just hope it performs as well tomorrow and the next day as well.

@daniel2828 thanks for that but as I didn't really need my iPhone this afternoon I left it backing up while I went out. 6 hours later and it's nearly over. I did put the phone into airplane mode before I started so that it wouldn't be interrupted by a call. I'm hoping that I'll end up with a viable backup after all this waiting although, looking at other posts this afternoon, I could end up with another brick again.
It's just so unbelievable that Apple has released a product with so many major faults. I used to think they were a top company but now I just get embarrassed when I admit to friends that my "top product" is not working.

I am now so happy - the 7 hour wait was actually worth it as not only do I have the 2.0.2 update, I have a viable backup that took a matter of minutes and all my apps are working. I just hope I never have to go through this nightmare again and that my future backups are as quick!
