How do I remove music from iPhone?

I just upgraded to the 3G and want to do a bit of re-organizing my music that is on both my first gen iPhone and my new 3G. The support article on the Apple site says to click the triangle and select which files I want to delete and hit the delete button. When I do this all of my music is grayed out and cannot be selected. Any help is greatly appreciated.
