This browser is the first 'cloud computing' browser. I like the idea a lot. The web is changing. The way we work is changing. I love Google documents. I can't think of ever using Word or any other word processor again from now on.

Why? Is the assumption that Safari uses the Google toolbar because they just want to be nice to Google? Right now, the Google search engine is the most relevant search engine. Likewise, it's in Apple and Mozilla's best interest to continue to offer this at least as an option. On the Windows side, Yahoo is an option for Safari. My guess is that Apple gets more money per search from Google. Who knows... Also, having another Webkit based browser gain marketshare is probably in both Apple and Safari's best interest.

That said - if this helps bring down IE, I'm all for it. The dominance of IE has encouraged developers to write all sorts of non-standards-compliant code, which makes some sites completely unusable with anything else. Things are definitely getting better, but there are still a lot of IE only sites (esp. business, rather than consumer, oriented sites).

Unfortunately, having better alternatives has never been enough to encourage the masses to abandon Microsoft's "easy choice" of OS and browser. I do hope IE drops to under 50% marketshare though as it will force web standards compliance as you mention.

"If you've tested your website with Safari 3.1 then your site should already work well on Google Chrome."
This note was found on the google web developers page.

Will it be in beta for years, like Gmail? If so, I will pass.

I think the concepts behind the Chrome browser are well thought out and address real and significant problems in current browsers. I'm looking forward to a Chrome browser for OSX.
In the meantime I'll have to flip to Vista on my Macbook to check out the Windows version.
I was concerned the comic strip approach would be tedious and that I wouldn't get through it. However, after making it through in one reading my kudos go out to the stripwriter for his artistry and to Google for taking such an innovative approach to explaining something quite technical.
