Ok so recently my iPod touch's 3rd party apps would crash after simply powering down and restarting the device. I tried numerous things; putting on less apps, just restoring and not backing up, restoring on a Mac vs a Windows based computer, and other things. None of which worked to fix the problem for good. Then one day I choose to move my itunes files and uninstall itunes then replace the music, video, picture, and all other files except for my mobile app files into my new itunes folder after reinstalling itunes. I decided to do this after looking in the mobile applications folder in my itunes folder on my PC,there I found about 300 or so app files many of which were updates for apps in the folder meaning that they were duplicates of different apps.

which means my mobile apps folder looked something like this

1Password
1Password1
1Password2
1Password3
1Password4
1Password5
Monkeyball
Monkeyball1
Monkeyball2

and so on.h time you download an app from the app store a copy is sent to your mobile applications folde
each time you update an app in that folder it stores an additional copy of that app along with the first original copy the first copy is not needed (or so i think) but it still syncs to you device along with the update copies

so lets say you have the only 3rd party app you have on your device is 1password (which saves your passwords under a main password so that only you have access to them). now lets say you have updated this app 5 times. you now have 6 copies of the app 1password that are being synced to your device.

However lets now say that you are like myself and you have about 60 apps after different amounts of updates for each app i had 322 apps that had to be synced/backed-up or restored each time

now your normal un-modded iphone or ipod touch is made to hold 128 apps including the ones already on it.
therefore it cant hold 322 apps without going a little slow

so to fix this problem before you update an app delete it from the mobile applications folder, your device, and from the itunes program itself then go into the apps store and re-download the app for free (note: you can do this if you have purchased the app originally and are signed in under the name you purchased it under.)

the time it took to backup my ipod touch has been greatly reduced after doing this and my restore time has gone from 15 hours to 2 hours (still a long time but better than 15 hours)

also i have had to restore the device one time after doing this because i unplugged my ipod during a sync where as before I was restoring it once a day for almost 2 months
