Regardless of what anybody says or thinks, Apple drives the industry...period. If not for Apple, no other such company would have any idea of what to copy...err...innovate themselves. They may frustrate you at times, but it is because of them that we have such lofty expectations of their products. They have conditioned us to expect the most and best from them. No other company can make such a claim. Just think, without Apple, you'd have no Windows (cheap, sub-standard Mac emulation OS for the PC). Apple drives much more than you realize.

I have an original iPhone, latest software, no problems at all.
Question (don't take this the wrong way) but who cares about play counts? People who care about forum post counts? Is there some contest or something I didn't know about?
It hardly sounds like a show stopper. Mmm ya, I've listened to Rick Astley 337 times now baby!! Beat that.

RobK, you're brave announcing how much you like Rick Astley!! The only time I used play counts was when I first imported all my CDs and had a playlist of unplayed songs. Other than that, it doesn't have much use, unless you don't know which tracks you listen to most!

Come on guys, Apple is a company, not a God. Everything touched by human hands can and will fail at some point. Companies make mistakes and Apple has made a few recently, but overall, the company is great with great products.

Yes Apple stuff is pricey, yes they have gotten a bit arrogant, but just like my Bama Crimson Tide, a legacy of greatness must be respected. Apple will recover and we will love them for it.

Just think of what the company has done to tech and to consumer prices. Motorola is going bankrupt because a few years ago they said that nothing could ever top the Razor, so they had no further innovation. Blackberrys were priced at $399-$499 for what, email? Then the iPhone came along and changed the game. This year they laid down the gauntlet that smartphones should never be priced above $199, and we all will benefit if we buy the iPhone or not.

Apple makes the entire capitalist world better and gives us great stuff to enhance life. I love Apple for the innovation and impact they make no matter what.

As for Apple TV, you are an idiot to buy that crap anyway with the slingbox, netflix, on demand and other options out there. Come on!

I don't take issue with all the iPod and iPhone developement.

I do take issue with a computer company that seems to be ignoring two key desktop systems - the Mac Pro and the Mac Mini. The Mac Pro hasn't been touched in 9 months and even the changes made 9 months ago were relatively minor, in terms of performance. The languishing Mac Mini, which is so perfect for so many of the Mac users I support hasn't seen any real change in 15 months or so. A bit lame given the pace of improvements to the iMac and MacBook lines of computers.

How would you improve the MacPro? I know that Intel just announced six core Xion processors. But they just announced them. Be sure we will see a 12 core MacPro soon.

On the Mini, I totally agree.

Maybe Apple wants to be more of a consumer electronics company, and I have no issue with expansion in that direction, but not at the expense of forgetting their history as a computer/software company - one whose track record with user experience has earned it's spot at the top with it's consumer electronics. Let's be sure it does so with it's Mac Pros and Mac Mini systems, too.

"Will Apple ever remember things like "OS X Leopard", "PowerPC", "Graphics Drivers", "OS X updates"?
If their plan is becoming iPod/iPhone company eventually releasing everything on Windows, they shouldn't bother us. "

Apple is remembering Leopard aka Snow Leopard that is coming out next year. PowerPC will be forgotten soon enough. If they become an iPhone/iPod company that will be a very interesting development.

My iPod, Apple TV, Time Capsule, Mac Pro, MacBook, iPod Nano, iPhone 2G and Airport Extreme are working just fine. I have Leopard on both Macs, and it is working fine. I have the 2.0.2 software on my iPhone and it is working fine.

I know I have been lucky dogging a lot of problems, particularly with the Apple TV and my Time Capsule, but they have been working just fine. I watch Juno list night on the AppleTV as a matter of fact. HD download took but 2 minutes for us to start watching it. My iPhone has brought a lot a value to my AppleTV since the only thing that I didn't really like was the lack of keyboard and the skimpy remote.

Dude, with all due respect, the MacBook Pro is perfect. What more do you need? Notice I did not say want. If you really are doing some true power stuff (high end or HD graphics and editing), you'd have a Mac Pro, Period. as for the mini, it doesn't sell that much. the iMac and MacBook are the bread and butter computers, so it is just simple economics why they get so much attention.

I would like them to take their time and extend the life of products like the MacBook Pro, because for what you pay for that baby, it needs to last and you need to feel like it lasts.

The Apple computers are not being ignored, I have a new Black MacBook 4GB RAM and I have Adobe CS3 and Quark running fine on it, the wireless N doesn't hurt either. I think new laptops are coming in the Spring when the new chips can be integrated. Still fast is fast. Macs are like owning a Porsche (sp), whether its an '89 911 or a '08 911, it's still fast, fun, and good as hell!

I can give 2 examples both related to graphics drivers of Leopard.
1) A huge simulation game I play have 50-60 fps on Tiger (nvidia 6600,quad G5,4.5 gb ram) which is all OK for me while Leopard has 10 FPS-12 FPS . I have reported it (of course), Apple was interested a bit and dropped interest. Every OS X update, especially graphics update, I run it with my hopes and I see the same situation.

Is there any reason you didn't mention which "simulation game" you are referring to? You mentioned that you reported it, but to who? Apple? How about the game vendor? If the issue were truly a Leopard problem, wouldn't this issue be more widespread and affect multiple games of the same type? Seriously, I play a significant number of Mac games and Leopard is as faster or faster than Tiger for me.

Quote

2) Every progress bar on OS X (that aqua progress bar) means WindowManager process will eat 40% of CPU (I got 4 cores, imagine single cpu!) and may hit 1.2 GB on long processes like iPhoto thumbnail cache update or disk utility. I reported it too of course.

I haven't seen this, but I'll try to force the iPhoto to rebuild it's cache to see if I can duplicate what you are seeing. Are you sure you're looking at the right process? Just having the activity monitor on adds to the window manager's CPU usage.

You would say: "Well, say you got fooled and go back to Tiger". Here is the issue: The other stuff on Leopard works PERFECT, way better. Especially multi threaded spotlight etc. finally makes use of my 4 processors.

As a person who still politely reports issues and offer any help to every developer reporting issues, you can imagine my frustration.

It's very possible that you do have some sort of driver related issue. I'm fairly confident that the issues you report are not common Leopard problems though. Have you found others with similar hardware configurations that experience the same problem?

OMGod !!!! They forced you to use a credit card!!!!!How awful, I cannot believe it!!!!
The world has finally coughed up something outrageous enough to put on MR.
Good grief people, no one made you buy the iPhone or any of the other products from Apple. I have owned many computers since 1986, only three of them were Windooooz. Currently have three ipods, with absolutely and positively no problems with any of them, A G5 Intel that runs every cotton pickin program I have ever thrown at it without a hitch, Mac Book Pro, and an eMac. The eMac is a slow runner but no problems other than that. Photo-Shop CS3, Illustrator CS3, In Design CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, plus at least 20 more.
BTW: Did you know the cost of AT&T service before you bought the iPhone? If not that is your problem and short sidedness, not Apple or AT&T.

I used to be excited about these, but not anymore.

It's kind of hard to get excited about new iPods these days. Maybe the nano will go from fat to skinny, etc. Whoopie... Let's hope Apple has a few other surprises up it's sleeve.

I think the AppleTV is a great concept, but I'm not yet happy with the execution. I'm waiting for true 1080p support, etc. The "Take 2" was more of a software upgrade than anything else. Let's hope the third time is the charm.

With that said, I'm not sure why some people are taking such a negative position with regards to Apple products. To hear some of the posts on this thread, one would think Leopard was the worst OS ever, the iPhone is horrible, etc, etc. While things may not be 100% perfect for everyone, Apple is still making great products. I'm just no sure how excited I can get for a simple product refresh. Let's hope this "event" is significant.

How about lowering the prices on the processor options. All they did
nine months back was to provide a small processor speed bump and a
large price bump. What about blue ray? What about an overall price
lowering for the starting point for a tower that has seen little change
in a number of years. How about a smaller tower? The current iteration is a beast compared to earlier towers that had room for all the optical drives and hard drives of the current system - and expansion slots.

I think, from a practical matter, they are likely running out of significant improvements - but that being the case - there is no reason they have to continue to make their highest profit margins on the Mac Pro. If they choose not to release the middle tower that so many have clamored for, then all the more reason to lower the starting price on the Mac Pro.

The Mac Mini is the computer for many customers. Apple pushes the iMac because it's better for them - but not for the customer. And if the Mac Mini had the processor and RAM options the iMac (current) has, as it did a year ago (or more), it would be all the more appropriate for even more of the Mac population and no need to worry about the hassles of a glossy screen.

Personally 720p is good enough for my aging eyes. From 10' away, I dare anybody to see de deference. I think as geeks we get enamored with technical aspects, but reality is reality. I hear a lot about the crap compression that is used on iTunes tracks, I can't hear the deference. Maybe someone can see or hear the deference, but in the end it's all perception and every bodies milage will vary. Personally, I think my money would be better spent in a new pair of glasses. :-)

Are movies 5:1 now for the AppleTV?
