Has anyone ever had experience upgrading from an academic version to a "real" version. In school, I bought the Design Standard CS3, but I am out now. I have read Adobe's site and I'm not clear if I can use the same upgrade path as someone who has a non-academic version. Does anyone have experience with this?

You can upgrade from Education to the regular version for the standard upgrade price if Adobe is consistent with the past. I did that very thing, because in some cases the upgrade is cheaper than going with a full Education version again.

Really? That's great. Apple doesn't do that. You have to pay the full price from the education version.

Sure hope CS4 is better than CS3. Biggest load of crap and waste of money ever. The creative suite concept is too much pressure for their developers and most of the individual programs suffer greatly because because of this. Better to release updates when they are ready not try to release everything at once. The CS approach has really weakened their products. It's too bad, Adobe use to be the best. From what I've seen of CS4 it looks pretty lame.

At least Adobe lets you buy the individual applications, unlike Apple. And at least Adobe updates all of the applications when they put out a new suite, unlike Apple.

The problem with adobe is that some if not most of the apps in the suite releases are really still beta and shouldn't be released. I wouldn't buy CS4 for at least 6 months after it's release unless you like a lot of headaches. Of course they never fixed Dreamweaver CS3 so there's no guarantee time will improve things.

I wouldn't get too excited. I've worked with the Dreamweaver beta and unless they've greatly improved it, you're going to be very disillusioned.

I'm still waiting for Apple to fix several bugs in FCS 2, over a year after it shipped.

The latest OS X 10.5.5 update hosed Motion 3 and it also made the GeForce 8800 half as fast in Motion. The fixed the crashing of Motion in 10.5.5 with the latest Pro Applications Update, but the GeForce 8800 is still half as fast.

Since OS X doesn't have System Restore, like Windows since 2001, you have to manually reinstall the OS and manually download and install all the updates to back to 10.5.4, assuming you don't do the time-consuming task of cloning your system every single time there is an update.

It sounds like you would be much happier if you stopped using Apple products entirely. If you feel that Microsoft and Adobe solutions are so much better, I strongly suggest you pursue that direction. Lord knows there would be less incessant whining around here. We've all heard your opinions of how much better you think Premiere is compared to FCP. I mean really... put your money where you mouth is. Just a thought. ;-)

I honestly beg to differ from the dissent over CS4. For one, I actually think it does more good than bad. The 3D object manipulation abilities in Photoshop and After Effects are extraordinary, and Flash is the best and most usable it has ever been. Also, OnLocation is now available for Macs!
Many people were way off saying that this was a bug fix release and that it would not have that many features. That is half-true in that while there are not many new things to offer, they actually have streamlined the entire line to make it a lot easier to use. Instead of quantity, Adobe focused on quality. Frankly, I'm upgrading to the Master Collection when I graduate despite the price!

LOL.

I own Windows, OS X, Adobe's suite, Apple's suite. Got it covered. Thanks.

@Leicaman: Thanks for the response. I sure hope the same policy remains true!

Yep, the education price of Aperture is a joke. You're better off buying the full version from the start.

I'd agree that the discount isn't very much, but I don't agree with your comment on the "full version". The education price is a discount from the full version. There isn't a separate education product with limited features or license restrictions. It's the same thing at a discounted price.

So, the requirements are at least a G5. I'm still holding onto a PowerBook (saving for the MBP, but 2,500 doesn't come overnight). Anyone know if Adobe will do like Apple did with Final Cut Studio and not allow an install if you don't meet the requirements?

I have to have Dreamweaver by November for the web design course I'm taking. I could purchase CS3, but CS4 is at arms reach, and Id prefer not to upgrade twice. I guess I'll wait for Trial Versions to be released and see if I can run it (or how slow it will be).
