I think there were / are multiple issues with regard to display problems with the MacBook Pro.
I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased in March, 2008. I was getting"display ripples" when scrolling text. Also, some videos would flicker, etc. This issue was discussed on Apple's discussion board in the thread below.

For me and many others, the issue was resolved with the 10.5.5 Leopard update. It looks like some are having hardware issues on top of that known software issue.

Dual Processor G5 is a doorstop and Apple refuses to even acknowledge there is a problem. I think if these systems were a little older and NVIDA wasn't picking up the tab or at least part of it you would see a darker side of Apple. I do love Apple but remember that they are NOT perfect and are NOT above acting like any other PC vendor. Just my two cents.

My MBP is in this range (fall 2007 2.2Ghz). I use it a lot by plugging in an external lcd/kbd and having those wake it up (leaving it closed). That has had problems from the outset with the display being black (and system death) but that was mostly fixed with a firmware update some time ago.
Now I still occasionally plug in and both displays are black, but there IS video and the white outline of the mouse can be seen and tracks, so its up. A round of unplugging, closing, so it sleeps, then doing it over usually fixes it. Not clear that is a problem with the GPU though.

Care to explain your problem with the Dual G5? If it is a liquid cooled model, Apple has been right there to repair the Mac, even out of warranty.

Read Apple's knowledge base article and both screens going black while the Mac is on is due to the faulty GPU. I would get your Mac fixed while you can to improve resale value in the future.

The info I was referring to in my first post was the article's advice about using System Profiler to id one's chipset. I pasted a quote from the article into my text, but it got deleted somehow from the version that appears in the main thread -- yet, the quote DOES appear in the "Replying To" version. Weird!
Anyway, sorry for any confusion.
