Hey,
I got my Air Port Extreme today. I was wondering though how I would connect. I have dialup that I'm using with the built-in modem on my iMac. The Air Port I notice only has two ports on it. The WAN port and the LAN port. How would I connect to the internet? Should I have gotten the Air Port Extreme with the built- in modem and external antenna port? That one was alot more. I hope I don't.
Thanks,
-Josh

Josh, there should be a modem in the non-Extreme base station as well. Setup is easy...make sure you've got access operating on the computer, then unplug the phone from the internal computer modem and plug it into the modem on the base station. Then run the Airport Setup Assistant. It will transfer your existing settings on the comp to the Airport. That's all there is to it!

Thanks for the reply!
No, there is't a modem port on it. Only a Etheret (WAN) port and a Ethernet (LAN) port.
So your saying that I should return the Air Port Extreme and get the Air Port base station?
I'm going to use the Air Port Extreme for my PowerBook (I haven't gotten it yet) that I got but with a Air Port card. Just wanted to mention it. Do I need to return it. The Air Port that is

If your internet connection is dial up and you currently have a mac desktop, then you have two choices...
1) Turn internet connection sharing on, on the desktop, and then plug the ethernet from the mac into the lan port on the airport basestation, and choose to not distribute ip in the airport base station settings (so the basestation will just act as a WAP and not a router)
2) return the one you got for the more expensive one with the modem in it. Honestly it's only $50 more to get it, and it will save you a lot of hassle (you won't have to have the desktop on to use the internet on the laptop, and you won't have to leave the desktop connected all the time and/or manually go to the desktop to connect). You'll also get an antenna port, so if you find a certain spot in your house just isn't getting any reception you can eventually save up and get an antenna.

Thank you very much!
I'm going to send back the air port I have and get the one with the modem. Doesn't the modem one also have the other ports on it? The LAN and WAN?

I think both Extreme stations have exactly the same ports except for the modem port and extension antenna port. But you should double-check the spec sheet at the Apple site to make sure. They're only $50 apart, right? Seems fair, $50 was the price of modems last time I walked through Beast Buy.

yes, the modem one has all the ports of the non-modem one, plus the modem and antenna ports. It's what I've currently got (even though I don't use the modem), just so I could get an antenna.
