I am STUNNED that they completely dropped FireWire from the MacBooks. Regardless of what USB fans say, even FW400 is better than USB 2 for external hard drives and Camcorders.
I know they pushed the specs of the MacBook up really close to the MB Pros now, but did they feel they needed to drop FW simply for product line differentiation? I guess the fully-loaded MacBook Black I just bought my son a month ago is not looking so "bad" after all then.

They didn't completely drop FW from the MacBooks...the low-end white MB is still in the lineup as the sub-$1000 option, and that one has an FW port.
I'm not too heartbroken about having bought the low-end MB two months ago. There's not a lot in the new MBs that makes me want to run out and trade up. (I actually like the white enclosures.)

Without Firewire, these are useless also for serious audio work. All mid-level or pro audio interfaces are Firewire (or internal cards).
(USB2 doesn't guarantee a given transfer rate, so it's unreliable for time-dependent streams of information, such as audio being recorded.)
Looks like I'm sticking with my two year old white MacBook (on which, yes, I've now produced two cds of my 9-13 piece brass band, fully multitracked, mixed in the box) until they bring Firewire back.
