I knew I wasn't alone in thinking I have bought my last Mac laptop. It is sad. I really love my 15" MacBook Pro (with matte screen). I am not looking forward to the day that I go to turn it on and it no longer works :( Good idea about eBay - there will likely be a used supply for quite a while.

In addition, the comment from Apple about turning if the glare is bad goes against my philosophy surrounding computers...computers should never get in the way of what I am trying to do. If I want to sit in a park (or office, etc), under a tree facing the mountains, I do not want my computer to become the obstacle to my enjoyment. I refuse to turn!

Glossy screens are STOOPID.
I'm with you. My MBP is matte, like god intended it.
That's two lost sales, and I suspect there'll be a lot more.

My current 15" Pro will be the last if they do not bring back the matte. I work in theater and any reflection is distracting. The brightness is almost off during performance so as not to bother the patrons that can see the screen.
My lighting guy has the Black MacBook and is always fiddling with it so that the screen looks OK.

Same thoughts. Also, color representation isn't as accurate on a glossy as it is on a matte, right?

I think it is hilarious that all of their product shots include a nasty glare in the upper right corner. I can hear the board now reviewing the art... "Is there any way we can illustrate the negatives of gloss screens?"

So what is stopping an entrepreneur from creating a magnetic matte protector screen?

Great article and absolutely right along the way I am thinking. I actually still have a 12" G4 PowerBook which is perfect for travel assignments and here I was waiting to replace the poor old thing with a comparable sized MacBook Pro. But now, not only have Apple once again ignored my niche of the market but they have once again bowed to the almighty dollar (read PC switcher market share) by adopting those awful Dell like glossy screens!
My plans to replace my laptop are now FIRMLY on hold until Jobs and Co see the light (pardon my pun) and if it has to be Ebay then so be it. I will NOT buy a glossy screen, from you Apple - hope you will soon see the error you have made.

Apple call it a MacBook Pro, but state that the screen is 'super' bright and have vivid colours. As a photographer I want a screen I can see and one that is clear and most importantly true.
I have all the colour correcting devices in place and with my setup I get the colours I expect. Not so when I tried an iMac - there is just too much variance and the colours on screen are not representative.
I bought my MBP a month ago because I needed it even though I knew these were due today. Seeing the graphics updates I could see the potential of the new graphics capability, but the glossy screen makes it a no go for me.
Matt screens for Pro's please Apple. At least give us the choice :)

I like the matte screen on my iMac because I can touch it and it hardly gets dirty. I haven't used a glossy screen but I don't think I would like it.

I have a matte 15" MBP C2D and I really don't want glossy. The glossy screen won't keep me from getting another MBP since I need a notebook, but it will force me to buy an anti-glare skin. Great. More money. And I noticed Apple doesn't include a DVI adapter, either. Because we're all supposed to get the new 24" LED monitor? Umm, no.

I am not totally disappointed with the new macbooks. just mostly ha. There are too many video and audio professionals out there that have invested in firewire devices and it's ridiculous that the new macbooks only have USB. not even an express card slot!! and even the macbook pros only have firewire 800! I'm an musician and I have home studio that's based around my first gen macbook pro. I was totally expecting the new line up to be so amazing that it would make me WANT to upgrade. Firewire 400 is way too important to me. I don't know what I'm gonna do when it's time to upgrade my machine. The glossy screen I don't mind as much just because my macbook pro is usually docked and hooked up to a Dell monitor(they are much cheaper than apple's monitors) but I do despise the glossy only option for notebooks. Apple just lost another sale.

Glossy screens are the greatest invention of mankind. My glossy screen iMac has the greatest color vividness I've ever seen. If Apple ever makes a matte computer again, I will cover it with a layer of shiny glass to retain the reflective properties of the screen that I've come to love and depend on.

ECONOMICS
I can understand the frustration... but unfortunately this is all based on economics. I saw a post on the previous article stating that more people want a matte screen than a glossy one... one problem, they didn't actually purchase them! I'd love to know the actual sales data when consumers had the choice - that will tell you all about the decision.
One factor that allows Apple to succeed is having a small product line that satisfies the majority of customers. They are not setup to satisfy small niche minority markets (that's not meant to diminish your valid points). If Apple start offer too many variables it increases the cost to the consumer.
